The bolillo were purchased along with the kimchi and other ingredients but tossed everything together. I like math so breaking down food costs is fun for me. Like the cucumber- a whole English cucumber was $.98 but I only used 1/8 of it so for the amount I used in my bowl was $.12. The bolillos were $1.98 for 6 so $.33 each.

You’re so good at it. I really hoped (at some point) we would have a cost analysis of the Bariatric lifestyles to show that food waste isn’t that significant and saving money in one area can free it up for other things (and maybe make it more inclusive/budget friendly)

Kimchi is so good. For reference, I would liken it to a Korean version of sauerkraut with way more spice.

Kimchi is a Korean a group fermented side dishes. Some are really spicy and some aren’t. Most people are familiar with kimchi made from Napa cabbage but there’s loads- cucumber, green cabbage, chive, and radish kimchis as well. If spicy isn’t your jam you can try making it yourself to adjust spice levels or looks for something called Water kimchi which is more of a pickled vegetables type of deal.

Oh for sure. People (in general not just WLS) would be so surprised in general the package cost isn’t the same as what you’re eating cost. So let’s make a hypothetical dinner for 5 people of steak, quinoa and mixed veggies with prices near me-

Organic quinoa- $3.27 for 16oz bag with 10 servings

Top sirloin $8.99/lb

Butter (for steak)- $3.58/lb or 32Tbsp

Frozen mixed veggies $1 for 1lb bag

Total cost would be- $16.84 You aren’t using all the butter or quinoa so food cost for the meal meal will be different.

Cooking 4 servings of quinoa, the 1lb of steak with 2Tbsp butter, and the bag of veggies makes dinner around $11.53 or roughly $2.31 per person.

It also comes down to 395 calories with 29g Protein, 17g fat, and 28g carbohydrates of which 6 are Fiber.

“Breakfast” for today- iced coffee and a potato kale skillet with an over easy egg. I had a coupon for free eggs this week! 🎉 Had I not though it would’ve been $1.82US instead.

dinner out with my colourist & her husband. Pre dinner gin & basil cocktail at local boutique hotel followed by dinner at nearby restaurant. Started with Brie baked in wood fire coals with fennel jam & fermented garlic honey. It was delicious. Wanted to scoop it up in spoonfuls but I used two small pieces of lavosh which sat ok. Then duck breast with puréed parsnip & baby carrots. Also sipped a glass of a lovely Grenache which I sadly couldn’t finish. I ate almost one piece of duck & 1/3 of the purée & carrots & have the leftovers for dinner tonight. Yippee!

Lots of young beautiful girls at the hotel. All dressed the same, with their matching laminated brows, lip & check fillers, lash implants & blonde hair. All mirror images of each other. Not an individual amongst them. Sad really.

Slightly curried chicken salad wrap. This was two meals worth of food but the log shows the total for all of it.

I used to eat lettuce wraps constantly because I like them and I couldn’t find good low carb substitutes. For me this what returning to basics would look like (not going back to a liquid diet).

What does everyone’s “back to basics” include/remove?

Oh no! Well if it’s any consolation I’m trying to regrow my lettuce from the stalk. If it works (and is fairly easy) I’ll let you know if that may be an option.

Yeah its because of the floods wiping the crops out. Most of our fruit and veg that is locally sourced is quite highly priced at the moment

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
