Am I the only one freaking out that the gastric sleeve surgery is forever? I can't even picture myself married forever lol. So yeah, forever is a long time! Anyone have the sleeve for a few years and how's it going? I'm new here. Thank you!

Hi Rose, i just celebrated my 3 year surgiversary yesterday and it's truly the best thing I've ever done for myself. Honestly i forget all the time that i had it done until it comes time to eat lol. Yes forever is a long time but it just becomes your way of life. You get used to eating smaller amounts and it just becomes your new norm. My sleeve still does exactly what it's supposed to and restricts me to about 2 cups of food or less in 1 sitting depending on the foods. Im also still very diligent about what i put in my mouth and i still have not gone back to drinking soda.

This is me 100% most of the time I think about it..but I try not to think about it cause I will throw myself into a panic/anxiety attach. I try to think of forever as a positive thing thought; even though we can never change our minds after surgery...that means that we've completely committed to ourselves for ourselves for the rest of our lives. I try to remind myself this is for me and I need to put myself first.

I hope this helps <3

I don't mean to be an @$$, but I never thought of myself as being fat forever either, couldn't imagine it. I always thought I'd lose it, one way or another. But it became increasingly obvious that if I didn't get this surgery, that I would be obese forever. I would die from weight related diseases or complications.

Just saying, this isn't the end of the world. I feel like a normal person now. I don't label myself as a bariatric patient. I don't think about it anymore. I eat well, that's it. Oh, and I go to the doctor to get my Vitamins checked.

Hi there,

Yes forever is a long time. I did not opt for the sleeve as they remove your stomach where as the Bypass they leave the stomach in you. This has come in very handy for me as the Bypass has left me with multiple issues and they are going to have to reverse it. Had I had the sleeve that would not be an option.

Aw well good! I have extremely bad anxiety and if I get to thinking like that about anything in life, but just surgery, it throws me into an anxiety/panic attack.

I’ve found that focusing on the good is the best approach for me. In this situation I know I need the surgery so I’ll focus on the good💜

Well said and I don't think there was any A$$ sound in that statement at all.

I would rather benefit from this surgery resulting in a longer forever than be fat and unhealthy for a significantly shorter forever.

I can relate. Back in 2011, when I was 370 lbs. I wanted to make changes, but I didn't want to commit to anything permanent.
Well, I got exactly that. I lost 70 lbs, but then started gaining some back and I just couldn't break 300 for more than a day. No matter what I did. I struggled for like 7 years. Finally I had the band removed and revised to the bypass. I can't tell you how many times I've regretted not getting the damn bypass in the first place. Those 7ish years could have been SO MUCH BETTER! But... I was too afraid to commit, and in the end, that's what sabotaged my weight loss, lack of commitment and follow through.

So, if you want something that's going to work, and last, and your biggest issue is that it's going to be a "forever" change... you have to ask yourself, how long do you want to be overweight? Do you want to get only some of the way to your goal and then have that non-permanent solution fail you?

And yes, I know that there is a rebound risk with all WLS. But, the changes that I personally have been forced to make, in order to make this revision to bypass work, are forever changes, because they need to be in order for them to work.

Thank you! I always put my children first but now I need to put myself first and like you said, focus on the good! Love that!

Wow I'm sorry you went through so much but hope you're happy now!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
