I also had heartburn for the first time in my life after VSG. I take Protonix, which is great, but I ran out and had a couple of days without pills before I could get my scrip filled. I took Tums for a couple of days and it did the job. Now I'm two months out and haven't had heartburn since, knock on wood!

There have been times that I ate Tums like candy. My husband thought I liked them so much that I was just eating them for fun! Never got kidney stones. I think the key is to make sure you're also getting enough fluids to flush the kidneys, but that's just my rationalization in my mind.
I also started getting heartburn around 3 weeks that developed into some pretty uncomfortable night time reflux. Nexium keeps the heartburn at bay, but the night time reflux remained. So, I did some research on natural ways to manage GERD and discovered that there are a lot of options. I never tried the lemon juice/baking soda above, BUT I do regularly drink hot water with lemon (like a tea) not only because it's good for health, but I genuinely like it. Aside from all of the supplements that have been shown rather effective, I'd say the thing that made the most difference for me was sleeping on an inclined bed. I'm not talking about sleeping sitting up or propped up, I mean put bricks under the feet of the head of your bed. I upped the head of my bed 5 or 6 inches and suffer no more! Seriously, can't advocate more for IBT https://inclinedbedtherapy.com/
Here's another link I used to help develop my GERD fighting regime http://doctorakil.com/heartburn/ I highly recommend DGL for effective rescue relief. I'd say it's better than TUMS.
I'd say that it's OK to take Tums as a rescue relief, but you'll want to look into long term treatment.

I would take the Tums, at least just temporarily if it will allow you to sleep, until you hear back
    from your surgeon.

I’m wrapping up Day 2 of 7 of my pre-op [clear] liquid diet. Are you able to have protein shakes? I feel like that’d make a world of difference for me

I understand that... but with how often people tend to "fall of the face of the Earth" with WLS stuff, those pages get unused really quickly. I've been in several over the 8 years or so I've been dealing with WLS's and it's always the same... a short period of activity followed by a very steady decline in participation. The open, non-specific groups have better, more consistent usage.

Is this the sept 2018 group? I’m scheduled for sept 5 also! Just found out yesterday that I was approved and got the date. Looks like there are quite a few scheduled for September 5! I start preop 8 days prior.

Update, my patient advocate was awesome and pulled some strings, so my surgery will now be 9/13 and I don't have to try to change my flights.

There’s 3 August 2018 FB groups I’ve found so far, but I didn’t look for any September or October groups.

Come check out my September 2018 Surgeries and Success, you may find a surgery twin there, a lot if people have checked in and new ones daily.

Hi, guys!! Just found out today I was approved and am scheduled for September 12 in Lewisville, TX. I am sooo excited! Congrats, y’all!
What all have you all bought in preparation for the surgery (vitamins, shakes, whatever...)? I’m trying to get my list together because I’m sure it’ll be here before I know it.

Thanks Matt! My friend (she had the sleeve done in December 2018) was saying to find a group of individuals who had it done right around the time I am going to get it done. That way we can have someone on the same path you know?

I haven't been told anything about a PT requirement as of yet. I have my last required apt next Wednesday so I will definitely ask.

I'm so glad I got the patches. I wear a multi-vitamin patch and a biotin patch every night while I sleep. Take them off 8 hours later and done. My surgeon recommended them and I got them cheaper off of this site than in the surgeon's office (PatchMD is the brand).

OMG say what?!?!?! I know surgeons vary on their requirements and such but I've never heard of this before. I know I will have to do a swallow test after the surgery (which I have been warned is awful; ugh not looking forward to that) but you had to do this pre-op as well?
