PPIs mandatory?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved two weeks ago and I'm losing weight and feeling well. I can only manage to eat about 500-600 calories a day, but as I'm well-hydrated, I'm not too worried about that.

However, I've been automatically put on a PPI for 3 months and I am slightly concerned about this, as I have read that they are hard to discontinue. I've forgotten to take them on a couple of occasions and haven't experienced any acid reflux as a result. I'm sticking to them, as I think the surgeon knows his stuff and I don't, but I'm interested to know anyone else's experience of these drugs.

What in the hell is a PPI?

Protein pump inhibitor - stops you producing excess stomach acid and getting GERD*.

*Are you OK with GERD? ;)

Yeah, you really want to be on an inhibitor while you are healing ESP with the sleeve since the sleeve is notorious for having elevated complications with GERD and reflux.

It's common with all WLS though, since they are damaging your stomach, you want as little irriation during healing as possible. That's where the acid reduction comes into play.

I was allowed to stop mine after the 3 months with no issues. Haven’t used it since.

Thanks for that, Matt.

May I ask - were you on PPIs and how easy was it for you to stop using them (if you did)?

I had started with them before surgery because of some stage 3 esophagitis, I'm still taking a half day's dose. I've been cleared to stop, but my surgeon agrees that continuing them isn't going to cause any issues, I just don't have the money to get another upper endoscopy to confirm the restoration of my esophagus, so I'm still taking them as a precaution. As far as stopping, I've missed days here and there without any negative effects. But the bypass doesn't have the GERD/Reflux issues like the sleeve does with the separation of the large portion of the stomach from the pouch.

I had GERD before my sleeve, but it was due to my meds I was taking, I've been on omeprezole for quite awhile and I definitely notice if I miss a few days. It's not like instant acting like tums. I haven't had issues with any GERD since surgery (3 months) but I definitely wouldn't stop mine. The only time I get heartburn (kinda) is when I eat things like chili or really Tomato base stuff, I'm not a fan of spicy things anyway.

My doc does them for a month for everyone. I stayed on an extra month so two total bc acid gave me a gnawing hungry type of feeling. Stopped easily at that point and have never had any issues since

I stay on my PPI not because of GERD, but because of this, the uncomfortable stomach grumbling feeling.

I'm reassured by all your posts that PPIs are effective and aren't incredibly difficult to stop.

Thanks for that!

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
