May 23rd surgery date. Waking up?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

My surgery is 3 weeks from today on 5/23.....iI'm anxious, excited and terrified at times but not as bad as I expected I would be. I'm kinda like ok I'm ready and I'll be fine and this is really happening lol. Anyway I had a question as I've never had surgery before, can anyone tell me if I will be dizzy upon waking from surgery? I have vertigo so I'm familiar with the feeling but I just want to be prepared so I don't freak out. Ik it's a minor concern but still lol. Thanks for responses, they are appreciated.

I wasn't really dizzy, just groggy. My eyes were blurry, and I couldn't read my phone very well for a few days. The nurse walked with me once, but then was convinced I was steady on my feet and cut me loose.

Good luck!

For me it was just like the movie, Dazed and Confused.

You will open your eyes, look around then go right back to sleep. Lol. I spoke with the nurse about pain and then she gave me morphin. My eyes went bright then i was out. She got a good laugh at me because of that. Like gassy girl, groggy is the better word to describe the first few moments after surgery.

And your first thought if all the posters I've read aren't lying-'
OMG WTF,did I just do? Even the happy little ones that say" doctor released me After a few hours, went to the shopping mall and the outlet stores and shopped until I reached my credit card limit!" they said that.
Me- I'll look like the survivor of a major gang war, looking bloated, grayish in color and walking very hesistanly, and holding onto my son's arm. Probably, like something the dog dragged out of the garbage and even he rejected it. And I'm sure my son will take a picture to post to BP as an object lesson. "But Mom they did say they wanted an 'After Picture" and with the last of my strength I threaten to choke him😸

Thank you everyone for responding. Makes me less nervous about that part. Now I just have to relax and know that I will wake up and not think of all the other crazy thoughts in my head lol. I just can't wait to be done and home. And to be healthy!

Hi had mine this week. That was the thing I was most worried about - how I would wake up - would I be dazed, nauseous , etc. I got a patch behind my ear to help with the nausea and then they gave me something in the IV, I woke up normally talked to the nurse that was there, went back to sleep for a little bit. It was all good. The morphine in recovery did make me sick so I went off of that.

My surgery is also on May 22. I had my pre- surgical appointment at the hospital today. Discovered the consent was for gastric bypass and not for gastric sleeve. I called the bariatric coordinator. She did not look at the consent I signed in the office. She only looked at the office note and saw the physician talked to me about the gastric bypass surgery. Unfortunately she did not get insurance approval for the gastric sleeve surgery. The approval is for gastric bypass. So now I am waiting for approval again [emoji29]

I had this same question! I am five days out, I remember falling asleep, and waking up with a nurse sitting with me. He asked me about my pain level, said we would get that under control (don’t remember being in pain at that point though) and then they would call my boyfriend back. During those minutes my bf was meeting with my surgeon and then he walked around the corner and I saw him for the first time. I was all smiles and totally fine. They wheeled me to my room and I took advantage of the morphine while in the hospital (no regrets about that btw...) the pain settled in once I got home and I have had some WTF have I done moments, and been emotional, but I’m really starting to feel like myself again, I’m off pain meds (2 days now) and I’m only feeling pain in my lower left incision near my belly button, which seems very common. They gave my a stomach binder that helps support my torso when I need it and minimizes the pain.

Message me if you want, I’m here for you! I’ve been right where you are.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
