December Bypass Surgery People- Check In!

Recommended Posts

Hello,
My surgery was Dec. 13 and I’m down 57 pounds. It’s been really rough for me. I had a leak and almost died and I’m still recovering. I’m improving little by little, very slowly.
My weight loss has been good, and I’m really happy with it. I’ve just hit my first stall, but I know to just keep working on it and it will eventually pass.

Did you have rny? How did you find out you had a leak? I'm so scared of that!

I'm a little over 3 months post op. HW = 260 SW = 244 CW = 196. I feel great, no issues except Constipation. I was suppose to have 3 month check up tomorrow, but cancelled due to a funeral. Next check up May 8th. So, I won't know my labs till then. My hair is falling out big time! Hope that stops soon! Has anyone had their labs done? How were they?

Had my checkup at my my surgeons office. He was not really impressed with my weight loss so far. I guess I’m not losing as quickly as expected? I have not been able to lose quickly ever since my thyroid went bad five years ago so not sure anything I can do.

I will focus on exercising and increasing my activity the next three months now that I’m more mobile and able to move about easier. The diet part is fairly easy at this point.

Sigh. If he thinks I’m going to be able to lose 180 pounds in one year he’s really going to be disappointed and that’s a very unreasonable goal.

My date of surgery was 12/18/17. I’ve released officially 32 lbs from surgery date. Was at my 3 month post op appt a week ago. They said I was right on tract with my weight loss. I have a long ways to go, like 100 lbs.
if you noticed I said release. I was at a seminar that encouraged being mindful in how you speak. Such as saying lost, means you’re looking for it. Trust me, I’m not looking for those 32 lbs again! [emoji13]. Hope this helps someone in their journey.
I need to kick up my activity. Found out yesterday that I have bones spurs in my right hip joint. Going to try injections before going for surgery. Hope they work.

It seems like my weight loss is starting to slow down a bit. I hope it doesn't stay like this long. I still have a long way to go to get to my goal. I started of fast so maybe that's why i'm slowing down. I struggle with patience and I know i need to get it in check before I drive myself crazy. lol. One day at a time is what I tell myself.

Hang in there Kim. You are already dealing with enough adjusting to the surgery and listening to your body. It's not easy. Listen to what the doctor says, but do what you have to do to stay sane and focused. This is YOUR journey. You make what you want out of it. You are doing fine. Just stay positive and take it one day at a time. We are always here if you need to vent. We all in this together! Go git'm!

Congrats to each of you for your amazing success. No matter how you slice it, you're doing great!!! My doc told me that anything between 2-4lbs is entirely average. :)

Also, I believe from reading, that there is a so called "3 month stall?" Maybe you guys are seeing this with your "slow down?"

But if you think about it, 3lbs/week x 52 weeks is 156lbs. :)

Keep on keeping on. And can I just say that Hair loss sucks big green ones? I can now see my scalp and am considering the dreaded "Toppik" hair fibers.

I did have RNY. I became really sick and couldn’t eat or drink and I had horrible pain on my left side. Also, I couldn’t take a deep breath. They did a cat scan and found the leak. After surgery I was in the hospital 29 days. It’s been a long process getting better.

13 weeks post op here. I feel really good. Down 47-lbs since surgery, 63 total. My hair is falling out by the boat load! My 3 month check up is the end of this month. Curious to see what my lab results will be. Hope your all doing great and feeling great!

My hair is falling out, also. I’ve been stalled for 5 1/2 weeks now.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
