Hi there! I’m finally on purée/soft foods and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to portion food so that you don’t overeat. I know they say eat until you are full but I haven’t reached that yet. I can’t tell when I’m full and don’t want to overeat. How much are we supposed to have at a meal? I’ve heard 4oz is this typical?

Here is advice my nutritionist gave me

use measuring cups, start with 1/4 cup size and use that as your guide. You will likely not eat that much in the 30 min eating window, eating for longer than that is considered grazing which has been known to cause regain

Don't try to eat more than that yet. Slowly work up to that goal

4 oz is the amount of dense Protein recommended when at the solids stage and that's a ways off for you

They have these awesome plate dividers. You can get them on Amazon. They even have them for different weights. Like maybe your goal weight etc. My hubby has one. I couldn't use them because I don't have enough room after eating my Protein. But that is just me. Good Luck

I eat roughly a half cup, so I still use one once in a while a collapsible measuring 1/2 cup. Useful at big eating events like buffets and family gatherings

So is 1/2 a cup for total food or Protein? How do you measure if you want like eggs and retried Beans? Hopefully that isn’t a dumb question.

Not a dumb question. They all go in the same cup or I do my best to guesstimate. For Protein like solid chicken I used to weigh it, now I can eyeball to within a ounce. For me I always eat the Protein first then move onto veggies, and maybe a spoonful of carbs, like corn. I know when I am full when I feel a pressure in the middle of my chest. I call it my popup timer.

So for loose food I use a measuring cup.

For solid food I use a scale when at home. I get about 4 to 5 oz depending on how solid.

I've never been a fan of "eat until you're full" because sometimes that comes too late. It seriously sucks when you go from "okay I'm full now" to a few minutes later of "okay I'm going to throw up right now!" :lol:

For the first few weeks I pretty much ate out of a measuring cup. 4 oz is typical, however at that stage there is such a difference between foods. You could likely get 4 oz of yogurt down without much fuss. 4 oz of chicken would have killed me once I was cleared to eat anything. The density of the food really matters.

Get yourself a nice little kitchen scale. You can pick one up from Walmart or Amazon for $10-15. Measure out your food and go from there. If you can comfortably eat 3 oz after a few times then try going up to 4 oz. Just keep in mind that 1 oz doesn't seem like much but it really is for us.

If you are out a don’t have your cup or scale, because let’s be honest, that’s gunna happen. I found this video by Dr. V to be helpful!

Man O Mighty!! I love this guy!! I wish he would have been my Surgeon!! Smart Guy!! Thanks for posting his link. Very interesting for sure!! Noone has taken the time t explain things like him. I was shocked when he said the "F" bomb. LOL

I second this! At my pre-op class we were told the same thing. Always use measuring cups and keep portions at 1/4 cup for now.

You can use measuring cups like someone else said, weigh your food or.... I just usually use them small tupperware containers. Them things usually get the job done.

I hope that’s true - what I’m doing too. Measuring/ weighing foods to 4 oz. I don’t feel full either and that makes me nervous- just don’t want to stretch pouch

      April Surgery
      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
