Only down 22lbs since surgery. Help!

Recommended Posts

Sleeved 6 weeks ago. I picked up grazing on crap. Getting back on wagon NOW. I feel like I'm failing already. Only down 22lbs since surgery. My new tummy handles food fine, I almost hate that. Need some encouragement. I can't fail! My parents paid for this! I know I can't beat this. Definitely do it when I'm bored old habit I guess. Starting gym tomorrow too. Ugh someone yell at me or slap me 🙄

22 pounds in SIX WEEKS is quite good ... about 1.6kg per week or 3.5 pounds per week ... well on the good half of the standard bell curve.

Methinks you're over-worrying about nothing.

You're losing at a very acceptable rate.

Just discipline yourself to steer clear of C.R.A.P. (Calorie Rich And Processed foods!)

You owe it to yourself to follow your WL clinic's recommendations. (And you probably don't want to disrespect your parents' $$$$ outlay!)

My mom paid for mine as well, I had to sign a contract with her, that if this fails, I have to pay it all back as well. But I feel the same way. Sleeved 12/14/17. I lost 15 lbs before surgery. But have only lost 18 lbs so far, I feel like I am failing as well. I have been walking on treadmill but only doing 75 kilometers. So I have picked it up and last night walked for 15 min and 230 kilometers.

Worry more about the bad habits and breaking those. The I only lost X amount of pounds in X amount of weeks is pointless. You cannot out exercise a terrible diet. Eat right and according to plan and you will lose weight. It’s just normally not as fast as we want to.

18 lbs in two weeks is a phenomenal rate of loss. Most of us lose 15-25 lbs in the entire first month. You are going to end up on the higher end of that range, if not over. You may be basing your expectations on what you see on shows like "My 600 lb Life". Yes, those people do drop a ton of weight the first month or two, but don't forget, they are starting out at 600+ lbs. For those of us more "normal" obese people, that much of a weight loss isn't at all common.. You will undoubtedly see a few of us who drop 30 lbs the first month, but they are outliers. Your weight loss is right on target - in fact, it's above average.

P.S. I *only* lost 16 lbs the first month (and that's in a month - not two weeks), and I lost over 200 lbs. Your commitment to your program is what makes the difference - not your rate of weight loss. But again, yours is absolutely fine.

Are you sure of your metric measurements?

230 kilometres is 230000 metres ... equal to 143 miles. It's quite IMPOSSIBLE to go that far on a treadmill in just 15 minutes. (It takes about 160 to 175 minutes to drive 230 kilometres in a car on a road trip.)

An average fit athlete might make 2.3 kilometres easily in a quarter of an hour.

I suspect that, if you've been building up since late October, you might be doing 2.3km (2300 metres) in a quarter-hour.

I love that you are open to the loving slap upside the head from us. Makes me giggle inside.

You are not failing, You slipped ..Get back on the horse. (or your waggon) Beating yourself down is not productive. Start building yourself up. You will overcome this.

Much of this process is the mental side of wight loss. Just because my tummy can handle/tolerate anything doesn't mean it's the correct choice. Giving myself permission to eat bad choices/graze was something I had to work on.

Might want to try getting rid of the temptation foods in your home...Or ask family to hide them from you..lol Yes, I have to do this when my willpower is weak.

I'm 4.5 weeks post-op and down only 16 lbs from surgery date. I've had a remarkably easy recovery, I haven't had an ounce of nausea, and everything I've eaten so far has agreed fine with me, plus I'm able to eat more than the 2-4 tbsp they say at this stage... I can eat up to half a cup already, so I hear you. I feel like this is going to make it WAY too easy to fall off the wagon at some point, so I make sure I LOG everything I eat on myfitnesspal, and I don't snack. I eat my 3 meals and get my liquids in, which helps keep me at the 600 calorie goal right now. I almost wish I had more complications to keep me from splurging, but I'm overly grateful that I haven't had any complications at all!!!!! It just means we have to work a little harder to keep ourselves on track. 22 lbs is great, keep it up!!

Hi @catwoman7!

Thank you so much for saying this. I feel so much better now because I was sleeved on 11/22 and have only lost 18 pounds. I feel like I should be losing much faster because so many others who were sleeved around the same time I was lost way more than I did in a shorter amount of time.

Why do you think you only lost 16 in the first month?

Why do you think you only lost 16 in the first month?

I'm not sure about my genetics or my metabolism rate, but I'm female and was post-menopausal when I had surgery (age and gender make a difference). Plus between the six-month supervised diet my insurance required, and the two-week pre-op diet my surgeon required, I lost 57 lbs. People who lose a lot of weight before surgery tend to lose slower the first month, too, because they've already lost most of their "water weight". So I had three known factors going against me - and for all I know, I could have slow metabolism and some genetic reasons for it, too. I really worried that I'd never lose all my weight, but I did - over 200 lbs. I just kept plugging away, following my program. I hardly ever went off my program until I hit maintenance because I knew this was my one chance, and I wasn't going to blow it. Although I do know others who lost about that much the first month, too. It's not really all that uncommon.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
