My program tells us we can expect to lose about 1/3 of our starting weight. Ideally I’d like to get to about 1/2- that would put me in a healthy weight category for my height. But honestly I can’t wrap my head around that. I’m currently 33 years old and probably haven’t been that weight since junior high.

In the end I’m looking forward to having more energy, less pain, and being healthy.

I’m just impressed that journaling, changing my eating behaviors, and drinking Water is actually helping me to lose weight before the surgery. So I’m excited to see what these changes will do when combined with the surgery.

How about you?

Thats great that your already losing before surgery and gaining healthy habbits. At the end of the day its really just instilling healthy long term habbits for the process to really work. Def cheering for you and everyone on here! Im excited to find a forum with people with similar goals its really motivating and encouraging hearing everyones journy.

Hi Jaz,

I am 5’7 , 235.8 with a BMI of 37.88. I am going through the beginning phase also. Had my first Surgery visit, did labs, just have a couple more thing to do. I also have high blood pressure. I tried so many different things before choosing surgery, all would work for a while but I would gain the weight back. I know this is the best decision for me!!!! I wish you all much success!!!!

My main goal is to be healthy, for my body to not hurt and to be able to keep up with my kids! I would love to actually be considered *slim* as thus is something I have NEVER, EVER, EVER been, I'm also praying that my husband and my 14 year old daughter will loose some weight with me. I worry over my daughter the most. She is 14 and only about 40 lbs smaller than me. I really hope that me getting healthy will encourage her to do the same[emoji173]

Chrisp2018, yeah get her involved, even if its walking, biking or swimming, as somebody who was over 200 when she graduated from high school, couldn't go to college for over a year and sat around the house getting bigger, I graduated at 17 and in those bad old days you couldn't get a decent job unless you were over 18. I laid down those fat cells and they only plumped up over the years. I was diagnosed with arthritis at 25, although I stayed active my weight bearing joints wore out early and I've had 2 knee replacements, probably should have had hips and even had one replaced in my right hand. Make it a fun challenge, I know you can do it and you'll be contributing to her future health. We'll be cheering you on from the sidelines. Have a fine day and please commit to a finer life.

Still waiting on a date. This is so frustrating. Got my last clearance Tuesday, and they said the scheduler had 31 people ahead of me. I was ready to flip a table. I started this process in July. My insurance required a six month period of medically supervised weight loss. Now, I'm in month 7, almost month 8, and I'm feeling like I'm going to lose my mind. My motivation has been next to nothing and I'm eating like crap. I don't want to start sabotaging the progress I've made so far, but my anxiety is through the roof, and all this waiting has me totally in a funk. I feel like it's never going to happen at this rate. I'm frustrated and losing steam.

I know your frustration, as I was in that headspace until two weeks ago when my Insurance approval finally came through after about 9 months since starting the process. Within the space of those two weeks I've met my surgeon to schedule surgery for 6th March and my dietician to go through the pre op 16 day diet. You're almost there!

Like you, I found the last two months particularly difficult as it seemed there were nothing but obstacles constantly being put in my way, so keep calm and you'll get there!

Thanks, I'm trying to keep myself busy, I got some small furniture pieces to repaint so I'm distracted this weekend!

Hello!

I am new to all of this as well. I have just started my journey on Jan. 3rd. My insurance requires a 6 month process before I am able to have surgery. I have been trying to find others in a similar situation. I am nervous about everything is going on. I am hoping to be able to learn from others on the site. About me: My name is Ashara, I am 26 years old and I work in a medical center doing many different things. :)

Hi Ashara, what a pretty name.I'm a little ahead of you, I have done all my prerequirements, waiting on a call or letter from my surgeon's office, looks like early-mid March for my RnY. That said do you still wanna be friends? I'm a great resource person, according to,my avatar on Bariatric Pal I am a Guru in Training. I take that judgement as a great compliment. Ask me anything, at 72 I have little if any shame. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hey girl ! Joining this journey with you! (Along with a lot of others) Im so glad i came across someone with sililar stats height and weight. Did any of the doctor's you met with say anything about your bmi being boarder line 40?

Hey! Welcome! I’m glad to see someone with similar stats too! None of the doctors I’ve seen have said anything about my BMI being borderline 40, though they did tell me to be mindful of weight loss before the pre-op diet because losing too much could disqualify me from surgery(I was on Phentermine from my PCP for a month before my appointment with my surgeon, had lost 11 lbs by the time I actually saw him)...have they said anything to you? Initially my BMI was 40, but I lost the 11 lbs, I stopped the Phentermine and immediately gained about 4 to 6 lbs of that 11 lost back...that’s why they told me to watch it, because I’d lose enough to disqualify myself, and whenever I came off the pill I’d gain it back, and then some.

Hi I’m also new on the site. I started the process a year ago and just got my surgery date last week. I had a few complications during the process and experienced some weight game which set me back. But hang in there because as soon as you get your date everything feels like it’s going super fast at least that is how i fee. I’m having surgery 2/27

Absolutely, I would like to be friends! With you being a little ahead of me, you would be an awesome source for any questions. Thank you for being so open to questions, I am sure that I will have many.

Thanks again!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
