20 days post-op: Protein problems & gained 1kg over night

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

just a quick compliment to this website and its community. You all seem to be very kind and caring to each other, supporting one another during the time of sleevery. My admiration for that.

I am 20 days post op and struggle a lot with my diet.

During the first week post op I lost 22lbs. Since last week I've lost another 6lbs. Last night I weighed myself and I was a 134kg and today (it's evening) I've weighed myself again and I gained 2lbs (1kg) and I'm back on 135kg. This just scared the living heck out of me. I barely eat, because I don't really know what to eat.

I struggle so much with protein-intake. I bought this whey Protein for so much money (we don't have much money..) and I can't even get it down! My belly can't go with the heavy thickness of Protein Shakes, it makes me ill. I saw they have this awesome 30g protein per bottle protein Water in England. They don't have it in Germany (where I'm from), it's frustrating. Dieting is hell for me right now, my body feels weak, I can barely focus on tasks. I drink quite normally, just water and tea. I can take in liquids max 800ml a day, if it goes well 1l a day.

Are there any pureed foods with lots of protein? I google all day but it drives me mad. Sometimes there are foods listed that I can't even afford (like avocados, they're very expensive here where I live). I have no one that I can talk to about this so I feel absolutely left alone, I'm on the verge of crying. I don't know how I'm going to manage this. liquid stage went fine but pureed stage seems to be going to be tough on me. I could eat pureed potatoes but then people say they have lots of carbs.

If anybody has some heartfelt advice, I'd be more than glad and happy to receive it. Thank you.

Also, is it normal that I haven't lost any weight in a few days/a week? Sorry for my dumb questions, I'm just on edge right now. Exams tomorrow, I don't even know where to put my head at first...

Yes normal not to lose for a time after some great losses.

What about canned chicken breast, greek yogurt, canned tuna, blended cottage cheese?

And you need 64oz of liquid a day, or you will get dehydrated which will make you dizzy and weak.

I'm supposed to be in the pureed stage, too. I'd rather not eat because purees are non-appetizing to me. I've transitioned myself to very soft foods: pintos and cheese, hamburger with gravy, grilled chicken, roasted veggies. I chew the meat very well before swallowing and I've done well so far. I sip all day. For Breakfast, I drink a Premier Protein shake. I don't enjoy the flavor, but I get it down. If it's too thick for you, try adding Water. I also eat pudding and popsicles. I'm waiting another week to officially get into the soft foods so my options increase. I feel your pain and I'm probably not offering much help. I just want you to know I'm not digging the pureed stage either. On another note, I'm also taking a class and had not been able to focus nor have the energy to apply myself. Luckily, my professor is working with me. Hopefully you can get that flexibility too. Best wishes.

Thank you everyone so much for your replies! Last night was rough on me, I panicked!

@Sosewsue61 I'm glad that's normal. I got worried that I might've done something wrong! I will try those foods and see if I can have them. I have googled lots of recipes and stand-alone foods but some I can not afford, so I gotta keep it "cheap". I will go to the store today and try to get all the things you named in your post! :) I usually manage a max. of 33oz, I'm trying real hard though but I've never been a big drinker, this is my biggest challenge I think. I was thinking of putting tiny Water bottles in every single room in the house and take a single sip each time I pass those rooms, does that sound like too much?

@GlowingGal It's comforting to know I'm not alone with the struggle and to know that you got an alternative already. I would love to try chicken, fish and salads. To be honest I've had a teaspoon of feta and tuna before and both went down well, the tuna felt a bit heavy though. But since the surgery I have never vomited or felt sick so I feel open enough for those foods already, it's just I'm really afraid that if I don' stick a 100% to the plan I will not lose any weight. Perhaps I'm just stressing myself out too much, I'm just really petrified of failing. :60_sweat:

@Tina Meinkowsky I've bought whey Protein Powder online the other day, 2kg (4lbs) pack! It is recommended to take 3 spoons of it (which have 30g of Protein in total) with water or milk and I've tried that, but he consistency is so thick and heavy that my stomach can't bear it, after a single sip I feel "sick" and stuffed, it's very uncomfortable. I'd mix the poweder with smoothies but it makes the smoothies thick in consistency so I struggle again. The best way for me would be protein water but for some reason that doesn't exist in Germany? Aren't there any tablet supplements with Proteins? :54_hushed:
Thank you all again tons for your replies!!!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
