Hi everyone

Ever since i thought abt having this surgery ive wanted the sleeve bc it has less risk. But now that i have read up on both..im not sure. Something that ive noticed more is my heartburn/acid reflux..should that be a reason to switch to rny? All advise is welcome.

Honestly, I went in planning on the RNY but my doctor and surgeon determined that I would be better off with the sleeve. I was disappointed at first but after thinking about it, I was fine with that. I have a history of binge eating and the doctors want me to be successful, so they suggested the sleeve since it is a bit more forgiving of the occasional binge.
I would meet with your doctors and then, together, you can decide which way to go. Good luck!!

I have the same question. My mom had RNY about 24 years ago and had a lot of medical issues related to it, which really worries me. I originally wanted the lap band (10+ years ago) but after a lot of research this past year I feel confident about VSG I'm just worried about the reflux. Right now I take Zantac when I have an issue but I'm worried about it getting worse after surgery. I would love to read everyone's input on this [emoji177]

Im still in the early stages so i will talk to my surgeon again for sure. I never noticed how often the reflux occured till i started researching these surgeries. Sometimes i think id rather deal with bad acid reflux then worse health complications associated with rny. Ive also read rny is better for high bmi...mine is 52...

Mine will barely be a 60 BMI by the time I have my surgery. They didn't tell me that was the reason but it does make sense.

My BMI is just over 40 and my surgeon mentioned that even though I have reflux now (minimal meds for it) he is confident that we will be able to keep a handle on it. I sure hope so, I don't want a second surgery or bad reflux.

I drink two table spoons of apple cider vinegar in the morning and the two table spoons in evening and I haven't had any signs of acid reflux since starting the pre op diet.

I had an EEG prior to my surgery ( scheduled on the 26th ). The dr found a Hiatal Hernia and she will be fixing this during my sleeve. It should improve my reflux immencely. Well after I am done healing per the dr.

My mother had the sleeve done a year ago, with out an eeg prior, and they also found a hernia and repaird it.

My surgeon & I reviewed both & ultimately decided on the sleeve. He was upfront that he just felt the sleeve "just made more sense to him" for me. His reasoning was because I don't have any co-morbidities and the "estimated" difference in weight loss was only like 7 lbs more or something if I went RNY. So he didn't feel that the extra long-term risk with RNY was worth it. He did mention if I had diabetes or GERD, he would have recommended RNY. Good luck with your decision!

Generally I think Diabetes, GERD, or being extremely obese you should lean towards the bypass. If youre on the lower bmi without gerd, or a younger female a sleeve is probable the better option.

I also had major concerns about heartburn as I'm taking daily over the counter meds for it right now but my surgeon convinced me the sleeve is still the best option and that there are solutions in the (in his view) unlikely event that it does become a problem

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
