Hi! The nutrition guideline book from my doc has conflicting info so I'd love to hear from you fine folks!

Tortillas, toast, rolls, etc...when did you start eating those? Any tips?

TIA!

I didn't incorporate tortillas, bread, and rolls back into my diet until I reached my goal weight.

Still, I'd tread carefully. I run an average of 30 miles per week, so I can eat plenty of carbs and maintain my weight. For those who are less active, eating carbs and sliders often spells REGAIN.

The guide my Dr gave was packed with carbs. I realized quickly that 1) I wouldn't hit my Protein goals if I ate the way it described and 2) carbs make me crave more carbs and spiral out. I probably average about 30grams total per day but I try to eat only complex carbs so no bread, sweets, pasta/rice. I eat potatoes a couple times a week but about 1/3 of a cup max.

I've been successful by avoiding most carbs. I'd skip the rolls, tortillas, Buns, even brad until you reach your goal, and then only incorporate the quality, complex carbs, and do so sparingly.

At 8.5 months post op, and just 10 lbs away from my goal, I just today ate my first slice of bread. It was whole grain, and I had it with turkey. I also worked out today! I feel great, but I wouldn't have (and don't suggest) you eat bread early on. Carbs are way too addictive and plus they take up and waste. valuable space in your tummy.

I haven't had any bread in almost 16 months, and I don't plan on bringing it back anytime soon. Carbs are my enemy.

I am on board with staying away from the carbs issue not even whole wheat or brown rice for me...there are so many alternatives out there. Carbs and gluten are the devils work !!! LOL :51_scream:

My program puts us on solids by day 4. If you stay in the hospital until day 3, which most do, they'll feed you a bread product on that day. It's this crisp thing that basically falls part when it hit your mouth, but it's a bread product. For the first 6 weeks you are allowed to have day old bread, nothing fresh. After week 6, everything is allowed.

I'm just over 3 months, I have had tortilla, Protein bread, Finn Crisp and a few other things. I don't eat it every day, but almost every week.

solids by day four? wow that's brutal ! I'm into my end of my 2nd month I didn't start solids until week 5.

I do eat melba toast from time to time with Soup or saltine crackers (just a couple). Me personally just no carbs/gluten.

@Jeffrey Stern it's all about the chewing. I had to, and still have to , chew everything to puree. No way around it. Tiny bites and chew chew chew

I have COMPLEX carbs on my plan and they don't interfere with how I'm losing weight. Key....COMPLEX carbs. Tortillas, breads, rolls...usually are made with simple carbs--those will hinder loss and can cause cravings. But COMPLEX carbs are not bad for you. I've said it once before somewhere...if you're eating a bowl of oatmeal (not the store bough packaged kind) and or even lentil Soup, are you still craving more oatmeal and lentils afterwards? No. Big difference between complex and simple. But again, answering your question, I'd stay away from the simple carbs for a while (till maintenance even) and that's if you're working it off like @Introversion does. :)

I don't usually post a strong opinion on any nutrition topic because everyone's journey is different and there are multiple paths to success.

However, I feel strongly enough about this that I gotta come out and say it......refined carbs like bread, rolls and Pasta should be avoided during weight loss. They trigger cravings and head hunger, they slide through too quickly, and they take up room that should be allocated to food that provides nutrition.

A big part of how WLS promotes success is our new ability to feel full and satisfied on less. If your stomach empties shortly after eating, then the tool's effectiveness is undermined.

Also, my experience has been that my desire for them is stronger than the satisfaction from eating them. I had the flu a few months back and doc's advice was to eat simple carbs for a day or 2 because my body needed them temporarily. I was psyched. FREE PASS!!! I ordered lo mein and thought it would be delicious. But it was Gummy and tasteless. I guess I used to inhale it so fast (and with a ton of duck sauce and crushed up fried wonton noodles sprinkled on top) that I never noticed it wasn't that good to start with.

What kind of oatmeal do you recommend?

This is the one I eat. It's not sweetened and loaded with whole grains.

In addition to the recommendation provided by Newme17, you cannot go wrong with steel cut oats. They take significantly longer to cook than Quaker oats, but they're more filling.

It has hit me today, as I sit in my chair at work that I don't have my belly sticking out to where it would hit the desk. Oh and I can cross my legs more comfortably. It amazes me just how much I have loss in inches vs actual pounds, I have lost 24 lbs all together. But I believe in inches all over about 3 inches. I am noticing more energy and have pep to my step. My skin is a lot clearer. My watch band is shorter by 3 notches. the little things are what I am noticing. When I bend over I don't feel out of breath or I am going to fall over ( weeble wobble).
I am having a hard time with my sweet tooth, it is very hard to not want to get some ice cream or chocolate. Candy I can do without. I have no craving really for that, just chocolate and ice cream. I have gone as far as taking Popsicle and putting them in my mixer with almond milk and making like ice cream with that/ sometimes I have added un-flavored protein powder.
I feel better everyday. The energy is great to have with having younger kids and being able to have the energy to keep up. 😃

If anyone has any advice on how to make your stomach feel better after you eat something you shouldn't have or at too fast, I would GREATLY appreciate it!! It's painful on both sides of my abdomen (like to the point I'm doubled over and using a hot water bottle in addition to medicine) and I'm really nauseous (the thought or smell of food is 🤢).
