My surgery is in Mexico with ALM for August 27th! i am having VSG

I am also getting the sleeve at ALM on August 27! I am very excited, but nervous as I have to go by myself due to my husband not being able to get off work. He just had a gastric bypass in Virginia; he is 5 weeks out and already lost 30+ lbs. His BMI was over 40 so our insurance covered his surgery. (Un)fortunately, I have no co-morbidities so our insurance company won't pay for my surgery. Thus, Mexico here I come!

My surgery date is August 9th at St Joseph's in Chicago with Dr Lutfi. Today is the first day of my pre op liquid diet. Im really hoping i can do this. Originally my date was July 26 but they had to change the date. I was a lot more confident before but now im a nervous wreck. I just turned 50 single mom of 4 and grandma of 2. only one left in the house.

Hi I'm new here! I'm a college student and I'm 20 years old. I've set my surgery date which is August 2nd however I'm having major second thoughts I thought if I could join this website maybe I can get some good advice. So I'm supposed to be on my two week pre op diet I'm five days in and haven't started becuase I had every intentions on backing out on the surgery. Today I woke up and I'm battling between getting the surgery and not getting it. I just keep thinking on the negative out comes such as my 21st birthday is coming up I won't be able to do anything and I'm just super bummed about that also I can't lie I really do like food and I'm just thinking I'll never be able to go out with my boyfriend and eat again and I just keep battling with this and have no idea what to do! Any suggestions?

we are about the same height and weight. My surgery is on 21st. Did you have a sleep study? Just asking because i never thought i had sleep apnea, but turns out I do.

I don't believe I have any sleep issues. My husband had sleep apnea, but since his surgery he hasn't had any problems!

If you haven't started your pre-op diet, you need to contact your surgeon, he might want to reschedule your surgery since he ordered it and feels he needs your liver to shrink before surgery for a safer surgery.

As for your indecision. Only you can make that decision. You can see a psychologist and find out if you are emotionally ready. It is a lifestyle change to loose the weight just as with any other diet. This is a tool to help you, but you will have to replace your old bad habits with new healthy ones. Your relationship with food needs to change, are you ready for this? the sleeve is not a magic bullet to loose weight and keep it off. You still will need to eat healthy. As for "never" going out to eat again, that isn't true. You will need to make healthy choices an possibly eat smaller portions than what you eat now and stand your ground and take responsibility for your food choices and health.

Good luck!

every time I thought I was sleeping, I woke up exhausted. Now I know that those where the worst nights with my apnea. Women can feel it a little different than man. I would also wake up starving, although i had eaten a good healthy meal the night before.

I hope one day, they approve lower BMI without having to have problems first.

Good luck to you! and how lucky to have a hubby as an inspiration and journey buddy!

Oh sorry, I totally get that, its a closed group so only those in the group should be able to see the posts and I tried to call it something that wasn't obviously weight loss surgery related for people who want to be more privet, but I completely understand the need for privacy ^_^

If you made it secret, than nobody could see the members.

Thank you for setting the group up on FB. I would really like to join, but have the same reservations about joining a public group (relative privacy). Is there any chance we could convince you to change the settings to "Secret Group"? People can still join by word of mouth (or seeing a link here), but noseybodies won't be able to see we're in the group, or see the intro page, etc.

If you have your reasons for keeping it public, I understand. I was just hoping to convince you, as I would *love* to join and get the support from everyone else going through an August sleeve surgery.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
