Surgery postponed for the right reason

Recommended Posts

Because I lost 10 pounds in the 2 week pre diet and I wish I had always had the discipline to just do it on my own. Now I'm in pain, have massive headache from not getting enough calories/water and I just feel so weak. I don't see how I can possibly get enough calories in me to be functional! Pity party right now, I'm sure it will be better in a few days when the pain subsides but any Protein I'm trying tastes awful. Just feeling bleak right now.

I use Unjury chocolate Protein Shakes. They're the only brand I can tolerate. How many calories are you taking in right now?
I'm still only getting around 550 and at 13 days out, I'm still weak but getting stronger. It definitely gets better. Remember all the past diets you've been on. How many were successful long term? (That'd be none if you qualified for WLS)
It's fairly common to experience regret right after. I'm guessing you're bummed because you feel bad about missing the tournament too? Have faith it will get better and definitely work hard to get down your fluids so you don't dehydrate. Headaches are a symptom of dehydration. (Hopefully you weaned off caffeine before surgery).
I hope you feel better soon.

The problem isn't losing weight, it's maintaining weight loss. Only 5% of people are successful at that. Please know that you now have an amazing tool to achieve long term weight loss! You will feel better soon and regrets should subside. Good luck!

I have never heard that our stomachs grow back?? That is absolutely wrong. This is a permanent procedure.

I think once you are able to take in more calories you may feel differently. I have never regretted my choice to have surgery, but I have been healing quickly and I am up to 700-800 calories already. I have plenty of energy.

I am three weeks tomorrow. I have been focusing on Protein and fluids and I have set my calorie goal to 800 in MFP. I haven't actually reached 800 yet, but I have gotten close. I don't want to mess up my metabolism by staying low calories for too long.

I lost 99 pounds during my six month pre-op diet program. When I met with my PCP to get medical clearance for the surgery, she and I talked about some doubts based upon my huge pre-op weight loss success. She advised that the surgery was still the best course of action to ensure my long-term success. And she was right. I've lost another 100+ pounds since the surgery last September and am only 16 pounds from my goal. I never would have gotten here on my own. I would have lost down to about 250 pounds, my bad habits would have come back and taken over, and a couple of years from now, I'd weigh 400 pounds again.

Give yourself a chance to be successful. food is not worth all of the agony that morbid obesity brings.

This is my fear as well. I also think I might find a bit more energy. I see my team this coming up Wednesday so I'm definitely asking about this.

You can't grow back something removed from your body. It is gone forever. Sleeve is really more perm that RNY since RNY can stretch and a properly formed sleeve cannot stretch out, RNY patients keep their entire stomach in their body forever, it is just severed. Many post-op people RNY have an expanded stomach at the top of their intestine. And in extreme circumstances, RNY is reversible, the sleeve isn't since the stomach is removed and disposed of.
SEAHAWKS FAN! I'm glad you decided not to have surgery if your heart wasn't in it. I feel like too many people have surgery when they are not committed 100%. Post-op is a lot easier when you have totally bought into the process. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I'm not sure about the 'many' you mentioned in regards to them having an expanded stomach. I'd love to see some facts to that. From my research, a correctly done RNY does not result in the pouch growing at all. The stoma can expand, but not the pouch. No more so than the sleeve.

Don't push yourself to take in a certain number of calories. I'm almost 6 months out and I still only get in between 646 and around 800 calories. I tried to eat more a few weeks ago because my weight loss slowed a little. But it just made it worse and it felt like too much to force myself to eat more. I realized that my body knows how many calories it needs. So I decided that as long as I am getting in my protein and fluids, and staying low carb, and can be as active as I am now, with more than enough energy, then I'm eating the right amount of calories.

But what's that going to do to your metabolism in the long run? I definitely want to be taking in more calories than that at six months.

That number of calories doesn't seem like enough especially if you are an active person. I am not pushing myself at all. Like I said I haven't actually reached 800 yet, but I think I will be there at 4-5 weeks post op.

I am an entomologist and I have a very active field season during the warmer months into Fall. I have started daily exercise on my elliptical as well as walking. I am not over doing it. I am just gradually increasing my exercise and calories as my body is healing.

I do not want to risk a slow metabolism by staying so low in calories. I honestly could not function at 646 calories with the amount of walking I do in a normal day a work.

Ok, I want to put the stomach stretching concept to rest. Essentially whether it stays 100% exactly the same, gets tighter, stretches out, regrows, relaxes, or turns into a joey (kangaroo baby)...

NONE OF IT MATTERS ... it's all just semantics.

For the vast majority of wls patients, the quantity of food they can consume increases over time. Immediately post op it is a few spoonfuls, down the line it is 4oz of tuna. Further down the line it might be more.

Will we win hot dog eating contests..ever? No, probably not. But we don't have to to regain the weight. Eating 2oz of ice cream 500 times a day will surely do that.

So whether I eat a gallon of raw spinach (because I have little restriction) or 2 oz of ice cream (because I have a lot of restriction).. it's what I put in my mouth that makes the difference.

http://www.obesitycoverage.com/weight-loss-surgeries/gastric-sleeve/gastric-sleeve-will-my-stomach-stretch

Quote

YOUR STOMACH CAN AND WILL STRETCH AFTER SURGERY

Our stomachs have the amazing ability to stretch and expand as a result of our food intake. The walls of our stomach are made up of folds of tissue called ‘Rugae.’ These are folds in the stomach wall that expand and contract as a direct response to food entering and flowing through your stomach.

Anyhow, my post was directly related to the fact that restriction gives way later on, and the hormone ghrelin returns to normal levels. This is why they say you can't rely on the surgery forever. People's intake increases, and as a result, the stomach grows. People can eat more. In the beginning it's a mixture of swelling reduction and stomach growth, later on it's related to diet, which most people increase. The stomach will retract as well to accommodate those who eat less as well.

The main function of the surgery is related to hormones. Most of us who have issues with overeating, it stems from busted hormones constantly telling us we're hungry, and doing ourselves no favors by eating bad food. The surgery is a tool to help change those things.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
