Hey BariatricPal Members,

We’re developing a new BariatricPal tracking app, and we want to know what features you want in it! Can you please let us know the MUST-HAVE features? Here are a few questions to guide you.

-Are restaurant foods essential?

-What is the easiest way to enter foods? Do you want to have a dropdown menu appear as you are typing?

-Do you need to be able to enter custom foods and recipes?

-Which nutrients are necessary to be tracked?

-Should some nutrients be more prominent than others? For example, do you want the option to choose a certain nutrient (say, Protein and water), and be able to see a countdown of the number of grams of protein and ounces of Water to get to your daily goal?

-Do you want to set customized goals for calories and nutrients?

-What other goal-setting features would you want to see?

Please describe any other features you want to see. What makes a food tracking app worth it to you? What does the user interface (what you see) look like?

Can you please say what is absolutely necessary, and what might be nice, and what you would hate to see? Or…how would you like your user experience to go? Can you describe what your ideal scenario would be each time you use the app?

We want to make this the best tracking app possible, so let us know. You can be part of making the best diet and weight loss tracker yet! Thanks!

It needs to factor in exercise daily totals. I like everything listed above. Also able to connect with other users.

- Water intake (48 fl oz minimum goal)

- Saturated fat & total fat & percent of each (goals set by user)

- Calories & percent of goal (set by user)

- All the main Vitamins & minerals (Bs, D, Calcium, Sodium, etc)

- # servings of vegetables & fruits and percent of daily goal

- Ability to add foods not in database and share that info with others (grows the database)

- Ability to add nutrient data for recipes & frequent food combos

Have a list of foods in the US and Canada that include nutritional info. Much like MFP. I believe theirs are user input though.

Ability to sync with fitness accessories like Apple Watches, Fitbit, etc. to monitor exercise, HR, etc. to calculate cals burned and monitor changes.

Reminders toward daily goals like Protein, or alerts about exceeding like carbs, cals, etc.

Supplement and medication reminders. Especially useful since Calcium supplements need to be spread out daily meaning other Vitamins essential to maximize absorption need to go with them. Certain foods and other vitamins interfere with absorption of nutrients or medications.

I don't need to connect to others.

It needs to be able to produce reports or be exported in a spreadsheet type format for keeping. Need to be able to see all history or archived history for trends.

Need to be somewhat customizable to add our own menu and save that, so we would not have to retype an entire recipe/meal each time it repeats - like 'Sue's chili, or 'Sue's Breakfast #2' - which might be 2 eggs over easy, 2 bacon, 1 tsp oil. Etc.

(Exercise is okay okay to add but I own a fitbit already, and yes it has a food function but I is not as user friendly as I would like).

Needs to let you track ur calories & goals EVEN IF ur on a VERY LOW CALORIE GOAL like 800/day & such...

Needs to remember ur recipies & fav food items longer than just a couple months bc i eat the same stuff on repeat alot...

Needs waaaaaay better variety (& more accurate) exercise count than MyFitnessPal...wanna know what's getting burnt while weight lifting too..

I would like to also see a reminder for meds/vitamins/supplements and an interaction list/recommendations regarding what not to take together or what times are most beneficial. Several meal plans for each post surgery phase, that uses real food and not just promoting certain brands of supplements/protein products would be helpful to us newbies. I felt overwhelmed just trying to figure out how I was going to get all of my Protein, Water, meds & supplements in a day and timing it so I would allow 60-90 minutes after meals before drinking & still get it all in to meet the daily intake quota.

I would also like to track carbs and Fiber so I can know my daily net carb totals. This is important for type 2 diabetics.

I would also like to be able to export the data into a spreadsheet.

I would also like to be able to link with my Apple Watch for exercise.

I second being able to have lower calorie goals.

I don't like the user interface of MFP at all. It's way more complicated than it needs to be. I used to use Samsung app until they canceled it as it was much easier to use. Needs to be tablet friendly please. All of the previous suggestions were good ones. Being able to enter a recipe would be helpful, so it could calculate your ingredients for you.

Absolutely necessary: a huge database and a reasonably easy way to add foods. The database is the reason I'm on MFP instead of any special bariatric app.

GW: 187 lb / 85 kg (I'll see when I get there)

I would love to have an option to scan a label/barcode instead of typing in info. Everything needs to be user friendly.

I agree with so many of the suggestions provided.
Personally, I use LoseIt and like it, but it's not specific to bariatric tracking. It has a seaech for foods in general; once you've developed a shake recipe, for example, you can go to your favorites and find it. If youre searching for a brand name, you can look in Supermarkets or Restaurants to find it. New ap needs a way to update foods and menus as changes are made.
I'm still pre op, but want ways to be successful: when to take Vitamins, medications with a reminder signal. Place to record weight, measurements with a graph to see visual.
Basically I would say to use what LoseIt has, improve upon it, and make it bariatric specific.
Thanks for asking for our input[emoji4]

Having the option of tracking a single bite of something. I don't know how many grams or ounces is in the average bite of food.

I too use MFP because of the huge database.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
