Post op depression, is there such thing?

Recommended Posts

Okay, i am not 2weeks post op from gastric sleeve. I been feeling really down, i never realized how strong my relationship wit food was. Getting full as fast as i do, and still seeing food on my plate sometimes makes me want to cry because all i want to do is finish it! It sounds so crazy i know trust me i know. I wish i wasnt this way, everytime i see a food commercial i have regrets about surgery and i feel ashamed 100%.. because i went into this not even because i wanted to look hotter or anything, im a mom of a 4 year old wit autism that i can barely keep up with and im only 23 years old. I barely enjoy my life as it is being heavy, but food was always something i used for comfort and i guess im going through emotions as i say goodbye to that habbit, as well as junk food. Has anyone on here dealt with this? By the way, thanks for taking time to read and to reply for those who do. Its so appreciated. - Karen

I'm a bit nervous about the same thing. Now I'm twice your age, and been heavy my whole life. As you get older, it really becomes difficult. As much as I will miss food, and I have a 5 year old who needs my attention. The weight is getting in the way, and I'm committed to get healthy for both of us.

You will do great, and when the weight comes off, you will appreciate it more.

Hi. Almost 4 days post op. One of the books I read (or maybe it was a suggestion of one of my wise friends) recommended getting a counselor if you don't have one already because many issues that we've been stuffing with food can come up post-operatively. Watching my husband eat toasted cheese sandwiches was kind of torture tonight even though I know that there is no way I could eat one right now--or for months to come. Someday... perhaps... a quarter of one of low-carb bread.

Good luck.

I recommend therapy. I personally have used food my whole life for stress relief, comfort, entertainment, to soothe myself, reward, you name it I used food for it! I was questioning my decision a few times in the 1st week or so. Am only 4 weeks out now but feeling better about things now. We did this to save ourselves from really bad health, decreased mobility, and probably early death. WE DID THE RIGHT THING. I've felt the same way several times especially that first 2 weeks.

I have made a conscious choice to cook for my husband. I love to cook. Its relaxing, creative outlet for me and one way I show love to family/friends. I need to learn to separate cooking from eating. These 2 things are very different acts. I've been pretty victorious thus far and that makes me feel happy and in control of my eating.

I don't miss junk foods or sweets so much. I want a big crunchy salad with grilled chicken or steak. I've made that mental choice to eat healthy from now on. Will I fall and make mistakes? Of course but 1 mistake does not end everything.

I want to encourage you to get some therapy. I am and it helps, a lot! Also do some reading on the mental/emotional aspects of eating and bariatrics. Super helpful. We can do this! You can do this. You are experiencing HEAD HUNGER. It is a real thing and it's tough! But you can get past it. We have to find new avenues for distraction instead of our old 'FRIEND" food/eating.

May God bless you and keep you on this journey. You can do it! :)

The above posters are spot on.

As for cleaning your plate, try to figure out how much food (or drink) you are able to (or should) consume at meal time. Only put that much in your dish.

Get tiny dishes and silverware.... you will be using them for a long time. They make flatware that isn't infantile/plastic coated (look up dematasse on Amazon).

You've got this!

I am now 4 months post op and know exactly how you feel. Especially when I was approved to eat solid foods I was so excited. Then when I couldn't finish my plate I started to doubt the choice I had made. I didn't realize how much food meant to me either. But I can tell you it does get better. All the previous posts got it right. Especially being able to talk to someone in a group or one on one is very important. People who have been there and understand. Post op depression is real! But I can say I made the right choice for my health. You can get get through it!

Karen, I am going into my 4th week out, and I feel exactly the same way. I just miss chewing. I have major back pain, and got the VS to help alleviate this. But for the past week, I've been having "buyers remorse." I am currently on full liquids, and I am just counting the days until I can move to the puree stage. Lol! Just hang in there, I know it has to get better from this point.

Hi Karen, I am too! My boyfriend and daughter went to Subway and it smelled soooo good. I had a half cup of unsweetened applesauce. I told them not to worry, that i need to get used to people around me eating things i cant have, but i nearly cried when we were leaving Subway. I wanted something so bad. I know it will get easier but I am here to say you arent alone!

I've suffered from depression since I was a teenager. Somehow I'm feeling better since my surgery two months ago. I think it may be the exercise (7 days a week). I've also been in therapy for over 30 years and take antidepressants. Perhaps you could talk to your primary care physician about starting a low dose antidepressant for a little while?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
