Hi, all. I'm about three months post-op now, and for about a month now, I've had numbness in my inner thighs and calves, my entire abdomen, and starting yesterday, tingling in my feet. I've also had extremely heavy periods since the surgery. I wasn't taking my Vitamins like I should've for the first two months or so, about, and after consulting my surgeon, they did bloodwork about a week ago, thinking I might be thiamine (b1) deficient. I got the results, and the surgeon says that everything looks fine, that my thiamine was within range, and that I should see my primary care doctor. With the holidays, I haven't had a chance yet (though not for a lack of trying to make an appointment), and I'm getting concerned. I've seen the blood work, and though the thiamine was within range, it was on the lower end of the range. (Normal is between 66 and 200 and mine was 72.) Could that still be causing the numbness? I've been taking all my Vitamins, including a B1 supplement, for about two and half to three weeks now, and I really haven't noticed much of a change, though I do feel a bit stronger. My numbness is still as bad as ever though.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? Could there be another cause?

Have you hurt your lower back? Lifted something too heavy while twisting? It reads like a pinched nerve IMHO, but I'm not in the medical field.

Funnily enough I have been experiencing the same symptoms to the point where I had an ambulance called out to me because of it. I've seen my doctor and they've put me on nerve pain relief but it hasn't helped. I feel it more pins and needles/numbness when I'm moving around. It's been going on for at least a month now. Just had my bloods done on yesterday. I will see what the results say and see if this truly the problem. Good luck on finding an answer for you.

If you find out what it is, please let me know! I still have the numbness and who knows what it is. It could be a pinched nerve, as mentioned above, but I really don't know.

I get numbness on the top outer thighs ,I'm pretty sure it is because of the nerves that travel from my trunk to my legs get compressed due to my hanging fat. I notice it more the longer I stand or walk. If I roll up a sock or paper towel so it is about 2" thick and place it in the fat fold that rests on my thigh it lifts the weight off just enough to prevent the nerves from being squished. I do it on both sides. So that is / are my symptoms and treatment.

I have the same feeling and I'm almost 2 months post op. I went to the ER afraid it was a blood clot and it wasn't. I'm making an appointment with my primary as it's pretty uncomfortable. I have the sensation in both of my legs.

Please let me know if you find anything...haven't found out the cause yet, and it's very frustrating! It feels like it's getting better with more physical activity and a B1 supplement and a magnesium supplement, but it's not completely gone.

I started experiencing numbness in both outer thighs last week. My VSG surgery was 12/21/16. I am going to see a doc but wanted to share something I found called Meralgia Parasthetica. Matches my symptoms exactly.

Thanks for the info. I went to the doctor and they gave me meds for nerve pain and it hasn't worked at all. I still don't know what this is all about. I've had this feeling now since end of December. Going back to the doctor again next week ????. Good luck on your appt with the dr.

@@leslaine I'm not a doc but I believe that meralgia paraesthetica is a very serious condition that often involves incontinence. If you are just having numbness/pain in your outer thigh it might be just nerve pain or even a herniated disk in your lumbar spine.

Apparently, Meralgia Parasthetica is a common occurrence after Bariatric surgery. I did a Google search on "Meralgia Parasthetica after Bariatric Surgery" and many instances came up. A few research articles blamed abdominal retractors used during surgery. Not sure if it's accurate, but definitely interesting.

Yes I remember seeing that too. I had severe pain and numbness from my hips around to outer thighs plus one leg was very weak and I kept falling while using steps.

This was almost 2 years ago, but it was about 9 months after my surgery. I was in agony and could barely walk.

Anyway I thought it was that maralgia thing but it ended up being 2 herniated disks in lower spine. I had to have an mri to diagnose it. Eventually it went away but it took like 2 months.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
