Food items that I am scared of..

Recommended Posts

@OCKPirate Thanks on the nut clarification! ...also I'm only mentally 12. Maturity level and whatnot. ;)

One has to be VERY careful on the web these days. @Alex has enough problems with rude people, he doesn't need someone being accused of being a pedophile or anything. ;-) Geez what is the web coming to these days?

Uh oh, now you're on some sort of internet predator watchlist ;) haha!

Lol. I won't touch them because then I will taste and be reminded of the forbidden flavours and then I might be in trouble again. I consider them extremely unhealthy food.

I am also scared of processed meats.

I am about 3 months out.

I can and I will.

In here we will post about foods that we are scared of or food items that make us nervous/guilty. We will share our opinions and hopefully give each other insight on whether our guilt or anxiety can be justified or not.

I am scared of the following items.

Potatoes

Peanut Butter

cheese

Rice

bread

Ice cream (even two spoons)

Home made yogurt

Canned Soups

I have recently had half a cup of small sized Tim Hortons coffee and dumped the rest out of too much guilt. I had apples with Peanut Butter and nearly cried from guilt..

I am afraid that I might be depriving myself of even the stuff that I am supposed to have..

I can and I will.

A lot of these I don't think are unhealthy like you said?

I think yogurt, certain cheese, natural peanut butter and brown rice are totally OK for us!

Oh ok I get it!

I am still too early post-op (3.5 weeks) to even think about trying any food that I overindulged in pre-op.

Also was diagnosed celiac at the same time so my list would have included pizza, Pasta, but I can't ever have them again bc of the wheat.

So I'm not sure what would make my list at this point. Oh I know- chocolate!

I'm 1 month post op... I am afraid of bread, pizza, carby foods. I am afraid they will swell up and get stuck in my sleeve and make me extremely uncomfortable for at least 12 hours to remind me of the bad choices I made and I can't be having that. Plus I feel like its a trigger food. BESIDES if I can only have 3 bites of it... why bother. ;)

once past having medical problems and cleared to eat any kind of food, I refuse to be *afraid of* or *guilty* about any foods.

that being said the sleeve makes it pretty darn easy for me to stick with my plan, and that is why I am happy with my surgery results. before surgery my hunger was unmanageable.

I hate pizza! And anything with cheese on it. It grosses me out.

You should get your proton powder in chocolate flavour.

I can and I will.

There is low fat cheese, and how much could you possibly eat right?

I know a lady who had a gastric bypass and she keeps a jar of Peanut Butter under the seat of her car just in case she forgets to eat or feels weird.. Then she's got something. Making your own Soup is easy and probably better, but then we end up with this big pot of it. But some Soups freeze well. Dairy, bread and potatoes I'd be scared of too! Dairy and starch

I keep Peanut Butter on hand, I find one or two teaspoons is very satisfying. coffee should actually be fine, caffeine can cause irritation after surgery but a few months out shouldn't be an issue. Just stay away from cream and sugar. A medium dunkin with milk and artificial sweetener is only around 50 calories.

I had the same problem, I was just hungry all the time, always foraging for food. The difference between then and now is amazing. I have to be careful or I forget to eat.

I am not "afraid" of certain foods either, but I do have certain foods that I have a healthy amount of respect for. Some, I simply do not eat, because I know that they will either slow or stop my progress. My sleeve has really helped me to choose better foods, to savor every portion, and make sure it's something that helps me rather than hurting me. I never thought I would be able to eat healthy and not feel deprived and depressed about it. Love my sleeve!!

I try not to be *afraid* of certain foods but I do categorize foods in ways that make it easy for me to quickly make decisions on what I will eat (or not eat) and how often. I try not to make it so complicated that it becomes inconvenient.

Basic rule of thumb for me is to stick a whole-foods based diet. Stay away from processed or refined products. I really feel that's been the key for me.

Watch the documentary called "Fed Up" and you might be afraid of processed foods when you're done. It really hit home for me. As a father, it was one of the most moving and infuriating docs I've ever seen...and it explains so much of how I got to where I was pre-op. Unlike the doc, however, I don't blame anyone but me for that, but at least now I know what to avoid B)

The only food that scares me is Kraft "Easy Cheese".

cheese should never come in an aerosol can! :)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
