How much time did you take off work?

Recommended Posts

I remember seeing a previous post about this topic but could find it. So I'm asking the question again.

My job requires us to apply for short term disability for being out of work due to medical reasons for more than 10 days. I originally put in a request for 15 days. That includes the day of my surger 9/06 through 9/20. After speaking to liberty mutual who handles the Leave of Absence and disability request they made me realize I may need more time. I was thinking about taking off until October 1st. My job requires standing for 8 hours and walking around, interacting with customers, and sometimes bending down. Sometimes I get so busy that I'm unable to sit or take a break. However I feel like 25 days out may be pushing it, but since I will receive pay during my time out I'm thinking about taking the time to make sure I've fully recuperated.

I am worried about coming back to work after a month and having my co workers notice the difference in my weight and I'm not sure how to handle it. I've only confided in a few people about my surgery and I didn't want a lot of people knowing.

So my questions are....

How long did you stay out of work?

and

How did you handle the reactions from your coworkers when you came back?

I am 4 weeks post-op tomorrow and am still easing back into work. I had 2 full weeks at home to heal and I NEEDED IT! Last week I worked Mon-Wed-Fri half days and I was exhausted by the time I got home, but each day was better. This week I'm planning to work half days all week, then resume full-time next week.

I think any WLS is such a huge trauma to your body, we need at least a few weeks to simply recoup (plus taking walks and sipping Water, of course [emoji6]). I opted to skip taking our STD for medical leave so I could still do some work from home, but if you have a good STD benefit then great!

Best of luck to you!

I planned to be off work one week; ended up taking two. The hospital stay was supposed to be two days but for me it was 5..just so much pain. No complications just slow to recover.

oh..as for co-workers..i work in a doctors office and just found it easier to be honest with them. We eat lunch together in the break room every day and it would have been obvious. Come to think of it I told everyone and wasn't shy about it. Today I have to bite my tongue when I see heavy people because I want to help them.

I've read a lot of people say the third week is pretty rough. I've got a desk job and am planning on 4 weeks. I don't want to go back tired, dizzy, or on all fluids.

I took off only 8 days after RNY on 7/18 since I don't have PTO in my job. I went home on post-op day 1. I went back to work for 3 days at half time after my 8 days off. I started back full time this week & have twice the normal amount of work, having been out for so long. (I own my business & no one else can do my particular job.) I sit a fair amount at work but walk often between exam rooms. I manage to drink 2 ounces about every 15 minutes. Although I am still very tired, I feel pretty good. That said, it might have been better to take the full two weeks off.

I took two weeks but I could have used an extra week. If you can take the time off from work, I suggest you do it. You'll be glad you did.

I am concerned how much time I will need off too. My husband and I both babysit our (almost 3 month old twin grandsons at our home.... I know I cannot pick them up for at least 2-3 weeks.

How much time would you recommend I take off?

I was approved for 6 weeks. I'm almost 3 weeks out. It gives me time to get used to eating what my pouch doesn't like and just get in the swing of things.

I took 4 weeks off from work. I appreciated the time off and needed it to understand my new system.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
