Officially pissed!!! Was just informed that my surgery which is scheduled for Monday will likely be cancelled due to an error with my insurance authorization

I know this is a terrible way to start your new journey, and I would be upset as well. However, look at it this way, you would rather have your insurance authorization done right instead of have the surgery to only be told afterwards it was wrong and you owe thousands of dollars and have to go through an appeals process. Your day will come, just try to remain positive, hang in there. Your time is coming.

You're welcome. I started the process in January when I was working for another employer and when I got to the end, I found out the insurance would only cover up to 50% or $10,000. I changed employers in June and the new employer offered bariatric surgery at 100%. The new insurance plan was effective August 1st after the waiting period, some of my pre-op stuff was still good except my stress test, chest x-ray, pre-op bloodwork, and my edg. I got all the stress test done and they submitted it to the insurance provider on the 3rd and I got an answer on August 14th. Scheduler called a week later for Sept 22. By me waiting instead of just jumping at the 1st chance I got (the approval at 50%) I saved myself so much money. It's tough but worth it. I was so ready to have it done too.

After a year and a half of going through this process I'm completely heartbroken. My surgery was cancelled 2 days before because of an insurance authorization mix up and now my insurance has denied me and my doctor told me there is nothing I can do at this point to have the surgery. I'm so incredibly disappointed and I feel like I'll never be able to live the life I've dreamed of living

I am so sorry @locsnpearlz. Is there a way to follow up with your insurance to discuss the mix up and why you were denied?

Appeal. Do you have any other illness or orthopedic issues to appeal with?

Appeal it. I was denied at first, wrote an appeal, told them everything I had gone through to try and lose weight. My appeal was overturned just had my surgery on the 27th. Google insurance appeals it was a big help. Don't give up!

I agree with the others. I find it very difficult to understand why your doctor said there is nothing he/she could do at this point. I would find another doctor/bariatric center who is willing to put in the appeal for you. Mine was denied and my bariatric center fought like crazy to get me approved.

Hi everybody, I was sleeved on September 9TH and I have lost 26 lbs so far. This week it's been very slow I only lost 3 lbs.

I don't know if it's because I'm not drinking that much, it's very hard to eat every 2 hours, so I'm afraid i'm not getting enough Protein.< /p>

Also for the past 3 days I've been getting what I think is restless leg syndrome and is making it really hard to sleep, is anybody getting that?

Hello my fellow September sleevers,

Today marks 3 months for me and I'm feeling pretty awesome. I went from a high of 210 to 169. My bmi was 37 not its 30. I'm only a couple lbs from not being obese. My boobies and butt have shrunk alot (kinda sad about the butt though).

I think the draw back to the surgery is being too poor to get a new wardrobe because everything is too big (happy problem right). Hope you guys are doing well also.

Hi! Did I write this? Today is 3 months for me, too, I started at 210 am now at 169! My butt is smaller (yay!!) but I'm kinda sad about my boobs. LOL.

It's so awesome to no longer be obese, but I really am looking forward to having a normal/healthy weight. I bought size 10 jeans yesterday. I've never bought a size 10 jean. Or at least as an adult. Maybe when I was 14. LOL

Life is good. :D

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
