Will WLS work if the problem isn't overeating?

@@NewMeBefore40 Actually the OP was asking about not overeating not calories. She eats junk food and fried foods just not what she considers large portions. Your situation sounds alot like mine and although I haven't had surgery yet - they tell me I will definitely lose weight even though I have difficulty now (regardless of what I do). I would start a new thread with your situation - I'm sure you'll get responses.

I definitely didn't intend to hijack the post.

She specifically stated on a few occasions that she wasn't referring to types of food but the amount of calories. So my interpretation is of her question is whether one who already limits calories to under 1000 will be able to lose weight with the surgery. My response was that the doctors say yes due to set point. My explanation of my situation was to illustrate the similarities and that I understand and actually read her post, since she was concerned that no one read and understood her.

Possibly I misunderstood, but that was my interpretation after reading several pages of her trying to get it across.

The OP stated that she does not overeat, that she doesn't eat 1000 calories a day, but chooses the wrong foods to eat (junk food, fried food, pizza, etc.). Just wanted to clarify that.

Also, there are many reasons people cannot lose weight. I was one of them. I am diabetic, and severely insulin resistant. This surgery helped to reset my body and my blood sugar is coming down nicely. Yes, I'm still using insulin, but not nearly as much as I was. Hopefully as more weight comes off, the need for the insulin will continue to decrease and eventually I can be without it. I ate Keto for a few years, exercised until I continually kept hurting myself, and didn't lose any weight. However, my blood sugar did respond for a bit, but then it just kept going higher and higher. I cannot afford for damage to occur to my organs, so I finally saw WLS as my last option. Now I wish I would have done it years ago. I do have metabolic syndrome, and you can do everything right and still not lose weight. Then it is just frustrating and depressing, to say the least.

The only time I've ever successfully lost weight was when I followed strict Atkins. I ate over 2500 calories a day on that diet and lost almost 150 lbs in a year. But I lacked the will power to STAY on it. I'm seeing surgery as being the tool I need to not start eating crap again. I'm certainly not going to sabotage myself after going to such extremes. But yes, I lack the will power myself to never eat crap again unless I have another tool in place.

You may find that even with a sleeve you have to stay strict on something like Atkins. Personally, I found that to be true. Even with the sleeve, I could not lose without carb restriction. Also, I think you'll find that once you're sleeved you'll see that you were still "overeating". I had the same fears - I had been low-carbing off and on for years and still managed to get past 400 pounds. I need(ed) the restriction to get my portions down to a size that would allow me to lose weight. Doing low carb now is easier now that I don't have a bottomless pit.

The quality of the calories makes a huge difference. My body responds to 1000 calories of donuts differently than it responds to 1000 calories of turkey.

i'm late to the conversation, but my issue was overeating bad foods, i was a total carboholic. now, seriously, even the thought of rice and Pasta makes my face scrunch up. i live in the netherlands, and i'd been craving some good chinese and mexican (cause both are terrible here!), and i could put a hurting on some fried rice and nachos. but now...blecch!

Mostly carbs. Things like chips, Pasta, pizza. Sugar is delicious but I can stay away from it for months at a time without a problem really. I can't have the RNY because some meds I have to take can't be taken with it so I'll be going with the sleeve. I don't mind putting in work with will power but having a tool that makes it harder to eat those things would be nice.

lol we went out for dinner the other night, and i was so sure that i wanted spaghetti. girl, i didn't eat any of the Pasta and all of the meatballs. that really was so funny to me, because i really wasn't a meat eater before. i ate it, but i primarily ate carbs.

i swear the next time we go there i'm going to ask them to hold the spaghetti.

I have been thinking more about this question lately and yesterday one of my realizations was that WLS gives you TIME while you LOSE weight to get used to new habits. My eyes and brain have adjusted to what an appropriate portion looks like. I don't necessarily have to eat until I am full. I eat what I portion out on my plate and have assessed (by food tracker) is appropriate for that meal. I am 1 year post-op. Might this change in the future? Perhaps, but I truly hope (and will continue to work on) that after a not so good choice or meal, I will always get back on track after each meal (and not waiting until the next day or the next Monday...)

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
