I see why its so hard to find NO COMPLICATION stories

Recommended Posts

Well said @@Womanvsmirror

There are a lot of whines, gripes and complainers. Quite frankly, they drain me....sap me of energy. I can't stand being around folks without drive and motivation. I can't take lazy folks. Can't freaking stand it.

Work hard. Play hard.

Spend more time on the "success stories" threads and all is well in the world. Positivity breeds positivity.

Looking forward to seeing your progress and observations along the way. It can be a fun and exciting time.

Once we get the fire lit beneath our rumps....the real dancing starts. :D

I am 9 month post op and had ZERO complications. My recovery was great, I had no pain in the hospital or at home, I was up and walking around and running errands in a matter of days. I haven't even had much hair loss at all.

When i was on the pre-op side i was on the site daily. And always found not just here but on other sites as well, its very easy to locate stories with complications but not as easy to find the one's with out. Now i know why, people just live. When they don't have problems they normally don't have many questions. But i think it does leave a lot of sites very one sided. So even though its early for me i am going to try to post more. Cause so far so good. I stopped taking pain meds 4 days out started driving the same time. the only issue i can say is getting my 64 oz., but its not an issue of pain or nausea , more like poor time management . Ill be going back to work in 2 weeks so i think that i will be very helpful with keeping a schedule, i will update as i go.

Good insight @@Womanvsmirror ! SO glad it's going well for you. Mine turned out beautifully, and even an unexpected huge benefit from the hiatal hernia repair. It's been the best thing I ever did for myself, and I've had ZERO complicatoins or problems. Sure i've gotten frustrated these past two years about an occasional stall, but now i have that in better perspective and don't let it rattle me.

That Water thing is hard, and heaven help me, even after two years I have to constantly remind myself. I'm glad at least that smaller bites and portions and not drinking with meals are all now firmly in the 'habit' part of my life.

off to get another freaking glass of Water now---

Can you explain the hiatal hernia repair benefits? I'm getting that done too, along with gall bladder removal and RNY on 6/27.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You have no idea how much I needed this post!! I'm on day 3 of my starvation, um I mean pre op diet and wondering what the hell I've gotten myself into. It's been almost one year since I decided I wanted this and for the very first time ( this morning) I thought about backing out.

@@taracutch - my hiatal hernia was causing painful hiccups and food coming back up, and both of those stopped afterwards. I'd had severe anemia for years and though I'd gone to several specialists they couldn't find where I was losing blood. No active ulcers or Gi track bleeds, etc. what they couldn't see was that fat deposits in my hiatal hernia (which created a pouch) where blocking the cameras from seeing striations which would actively bleed like an ulcer, causing the anemia. Fat deposit removed, striations repaired, hernia repaired to prevent recurrence, and no more anemia for me. Such a happy thing!!

I am just under 3-years post-op at about 33 months-ish and I have had no real complications. I have a sleeve that doesn't like fried food, oils, fats, sugar and heavy dairy and periodically it pukes regular things that it normally doesn't complain about. I have a slight stricture so I can't eat too much too quickly or I barf. Both of those things have been good for me because it is a physical control that keeps me in check. I don't have any interest in the vast majority of junk food, because while it took about 18 months of barfing almost everyday, I have now learned that I don't get to eat burgers, ice cream, and cheesedogs if I don't want to be sick and rather than not eating them to avoid being sick, I've been conditioned to just not want them. I wouldn't really call this a complication as much as a blessing, although for a new person reading this I can see that it might contribute to concern. I promise, being thin is worth far more than any burger could ever be.

Thanks for the update. I hate people are more inclined to only post or update the negative stuff especially for us pre-op to hear "normal " less complicate stories is so helpful. Keep us updated on the journey thanks

Seven months out, no complications other than occasional heartburn when I eat too late before I go to bed. I never really paid much attention to the horror stories since I did my research and knew serious complications are very rare with sleeve. But everybody's experience is different, that's part of the risk/reward if the surgery works, only you can make the decision if it is the best path for you.

You're absolutely right. That's also why you don't see as many "maintained weight loss for several years" posts. Once you kind of get past that rapid weight loss, everything kind of falls into a groove, and you don't really come back as often. Congrats on your experience thus far.

I am trying to only weigh the 16th an 1st of the month. I know if I am not careful, I can become obsessive and be disappointed easily in the scales. I am hoping I will see progress.

I think that's a good idea. I'm 8 days out, and Mon, Tues, and We'd this week I got heavier. Stressed me out, but I KNOW I can't be putting on fat, because I'm eating about 900 cals/day. So now I'm only going to weigh once a week.

Ok ok ok....I'll TRY to only weigh once a week

I had the world's easiest recovery. I never had gas pains. I am 18 months out and down 80 pounds since surgery and 106 since highest.

The only thing my sleeve seems to not like is soda. My surgeon allows soda after 6 months. I had a sip of my husband's a few months ago because I had a nasty taste in my mouth and even after swishing it around in my mouth before swallowing it was a little uncomfortable. I could not imagine taking a bigger swallow. No great loss for me to not drink soda.

I took 1 pain pill the night I was discharged just to make sure I slept well that night and did not even take a Tylenol after that.

I am off the Nexium, high blood pressure meds, 2 diabetic drugs that I was using off label for PCOS and off the pee pills (Detrol). I am using Celebrex but the low dose about once a week. (Surgeon approved the Celebrex)

I started riding my horse again about 1 month after surgery. I would have been sooner except I put an immersion blender blade through the tip of a finger on my left hand and needed 7 stitches.

I feel great.

Still have 20 pounds I want to lose and I am slowly getting there.

Hello all..... I'm glad to have found this thread. I'm 9 days post op and I have to admit...everything is going great. I was reading other threads and began to wonder

if something was wrong. I'm following my post op diet, my pain is non existant, I am even back to work. I guess the hardest thing for me right now are the television food commercials. ...I change the channel allot lol.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
