The straw that broke the camel's back

Recommended Posts

What happened that made you decide "That's it! I'm getting weight loss surgery!"?

For me, it was that I've been overweight since my early 20s and I am not 37 and I STILL don't have diabetes or heart disease... but if I keep going like I am, I'm going to get those things eventually! And I've given myself enough time to do it on my own and I obviously can't, so weight loss surgery it is! It will force me to eat right for a while which will get me in that habit and I will continue that way for the rest of my life.

So what about you?

I'm in the same boat you are. I had no medical problems and felt like I was on borrowed time before I ended up with some medical problems. I'm 33 and decided that now is the time. I was sleeved on 3/7/16, and it was the best choice I ever made. I feel so much different and have so much more energy. I have lost a total of 76lbs!! It's not an easy journey, but one I know I can do!!

I'm 42 and have been overweight most of my adult life. Hell...I was an overweight teen! Any who I decided that I was tired of being overweight and trying on my own. Obviously, I can't do it on my own! I don't have any other medical issues except for GERD and low back pain which was caused by a work accident but is made worse by my weight. I have always secretly wanted this surgery but never had looked into it until recently.

I learned how safe the surgery actually is and decided I didn't want to die early. Simple as that!

I'm still finishing up my check list before I get approved. That's IF I get approved! Man, I really hope I am!

This getting approved thing is so annoying... It hard to mentally prepare for surgery when you don't know if you will get approved...

I have been overweight my entire adult life. While we were on vacation last year two things happened: 1) I saw a picture my Dad had taken of the family and I honestly didn't recognize myself and 2) I realized that I was missing out on everything with my family (playing on the beach, long walks, bike rides, etc). The week after we got back I made an appointment with my family doctor for a WLS referral.

I've always been overweight. I honestly thought it was normal when I was younger because my family was full of overweight people. Almost two years ago I lost an uncle to congestive heart failure. He was very overweight, had sleep apnea and other health problems. I'm overweight, have sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure, and more. I've tried to lose weight many different ways but it never sticks. I finally got tired of feeling like I'm dying in my own body. Don't get me wrong I love myself but I don't love all of the extra weight. It's damaging my whole being. I was scared of the surgery but then I found out my aunt did it and since I've considered it, I've found so many helpful people that it makes the process seem simple. I know it's major surgery but I don't feel alone in the process with being able to reach out to so many people over the Internet. I'm new to the process so I have a few appointments to go but hopefully everything goes well!!

I'm 22 years old and for the last 15 years of my life I've been overweight. I've always been the bigger girl.

I have two year twin girls, who mean the world to me. I don't want to continue to shorten my life. My girls deserve a healthy mommy.

I deserve a healthy life.

I'm 52, been overweight most of my life. My wake up call was in January when I was having knee trouble and nothing was helping, the Dr I went to stated very clearly "no one is going to do anything for you at your current weight"..... So here I am. Don't have a surgery date yet, few more thing to complete and hope to have it done soon. Been pretty healthy most of my life, just overweight. I've been in every direction, excited, nervous, scared, happy, sad. But my goal is to be healthy

Good luck to all of you.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
