The straw that broke the camel's back

Recommended Posts

I've been overweight since kindergarten.

My Father died at 46 from heart failure!

I have a broken bone in my left foot that I want treated or can bare through with less weight.

And finally I wanna zip line without being scared of exceeding weight limit

What happened that made you decide "That's it! I'm getting weight loss surgery!"?

For me, it was that I've been overweight since my early 20s and I am not 37 and I STILL don't have diabetes or heart disease... but if I keep going like I am, I'm going to get those things eventually! And I've given myself enough time to do it on my own and I obviously can't, so weight loss surgery it is! It will force me to eat right for a while which will get me in that habit and I will continue that way for the rest of my life.

So what about you?

My "Aha!" moment for me was when I was realized I had lost and regained the same 90 pounds....TWICE! smh

I made up my mind to have it done because of all the medical problems and everything that I tried didn't work

I started having knee problems last December and I was limping pretty badly. I thought that maybe I had picked up a few extra pounds and I should lose some weight. I went to the store and purchased healthy foods, some small weights and a scale. When I weighed myself the next morning and realized that I only a few lbs shy of 400 I got really serious with my eating. I ate healthy for a week and I stepped on the scale expecting a 10lb lost because that's always how it starts for me. Unfortunately... I had only lost two ounces. That's when the fear and reality set in. I already have high blood pressure and now my mobility was decreasing. The idea of becoming immobilized at my weight is my worst nightmare. I called my doctor a week later.

I have always been bigger than most, but I was diagnosed in 2008 with PCOS. That made it 1000 times harder to lose weight and then I packed on a ton of weight. I have a toddler that needs me to be healthy, too. Time to make a change.

My mom passed away from a massive heart attack after years of being overweight and not eating healthy and I realilzed I'm following her footsteps, except for the fact that I exercise and participate in at least 6-7 5k races each year. She passed when she was 68, one year ago as of February and I am 49 and want to live longer.

I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2014. I had suddenly put on 50 lbs in about three months with zero change in diet or exercise. I have severe issues with my knees that can only be dealt with surgery and I can't get the surgery until I lose weight. Can't lose weight due to PCOS. I also have LPRD, or GERD but worse. Gastric bypass is the only option in order for me to get my health back.

I can't say there was 1 defining moment. I started thinking about surgery in 2004 when I was pregnant with my 3rd child but dismissed it. In 2009 and again in 2013 I was able to lose 60 lbs - and regain. As I was contemplating how much weight I had gained in January of this year,my mind went back to surgery. I know i can stick to an eating plan for at least 9 months without surgery so I'm sure I will be able to do this with surgery. My children have been so supportive of this.

I am 43 and I don't have any health issues although at my last check up my blood sugar was elevated and my doctor told me it's really just a matter of time before I develop diabetes. So I realized that this is not how I want my story to go. I'm in Ontario so it will probably be a year before I have the surgery but I can't wait.

I've yo-yo'ed up and down all my adult life (I'm 45). I'll weight and then gain back more. My resulting weight keeps climbing and climbing.

I just got to the point that I know I need to fundamentally change my relationship with food.

I'm 21 years old and have been fat all my life. What broke the camel's back was when I was diagnosed with diabetes before going away for school. I cried more because of my mom's reaction than the actual diagnosis. But that diagnosis opened my eyes that I had to lose weight or I wouldn't live long.

A few other things:

  • I didn't like the way I felt in clothes.
  • I didn't like the way I looked in photos.
  • I developed unwanted hair and dark Patches of skin on my body.
  • I could have fertility issues in the future.

Overall, I just want to start living.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
