Who you can see and where you can have your surgery may have a lot to do with who your insured by, and which medical group/IPA you're with if you have H M O insurance. Are you H M O, or P P O?

In that case, there are large bariatric surgery centers at UCSF, CPMC (San Francisco); John Muir Concord (both Dr. Chin and his group, and Dr. Kwan and her colleagues; Valleycare in Pleasanton, and Alta Bates-Summit in Oakland (First Surgical). I believe there is also one down the Peninsula, but I don't know for certain.

My PCP's office had such trouble with Dr. Chin's office staff that I was switched to Dr. Kwan and I'm very, very happy with both her and her staff. I manage a lot of clients who use both First Surgical and Valleycare, and they are happy with both. I don't have any first hand experience with the San Francisco locations or surgeons.

I will say Dr Chins office was a hassle but I put up with it because of his reputation as a surgeon. I found one person in the office who got things done and that's who I work with solely now.

I was with Dr. Kwan and liked her but her lack of experience kinda concerned me and she was the first surgeon I ever met with. I even went through a 6 month pre surgery thing and lost 20lbs got an EGD and did meetings with the nutritionalist and psychologist ultimately to cancel with her I'll look into Dr Chin. Thank you!!!

Now Dr Chin doesn't have great bedside manner but he's an amazing surgeon. He mainly is an ER trauma surgeon and he does bariatric two days a week. So I trusted him a lot.

I'm with Diane Kwan in Concord and will have surgery at John Muir Concord. Dr Kwan has been great! She was recommended by my PCP. I did research her and she did a specific fellowship on bariatric surgery. She is one of the few who uses a robotic laparoscopic machine which she describes as giving her wrists while doing the surgery. That gets her better angles as she works. She is about my age as well (I just turned 43) so I feel like she has good experience and is also still connected to the newest information.
During my pre op admission appointment the nurse said if she ever got this surgery she would do it with Dr Kwan.
The staff in her office aren't always able to answer the phone but they return your calls and I email using the john muir site and get prompt responses.

I second dr. Marc zare! He is head of bariatric surgery at Good Samaritan hospital in San Jose, is very well respected and trained, and is wonderful to work with. Every physician I have seen and spoke to about WLS have all recommend him. Best of luck!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
