I absolutely regret having this surgery

As another has asked, what exactly are you trying to eat? At three weeks you should be in the soft food stage at most and are not ready for normal food.

You should embrace the restriction. That's the whole point of it. That's the sleeve doing it's job.

As far as drinking, at this stage you have to take very small sips all day long. With time your stomach will heal. When it does you will be able to eat more and drink more.

Did you do a pre-op diet?

I was still in pureed stage so cream Soups and broth...I got sooo sick of the pureed stage til I advanced myself a few days earlier to the soft foods and tried baked tilapia and one lean Italian turkey sausage meatball...both went down well with no problem but the liquids are my biggest issue...I haven't been able to get any Protein in the past two or three days nor have I taken my Vitamins...all make me literally sick to my stomach and that's what's making me second guess the decision...I know I'm probably reacting based on emotion alone but I don't know anyone personally who has had the sleeve so I have no one to turn to for advice and things...I didn't know if these symptoms were normal or anything-so sometimes I just feel alone on this journey because I don't know what to expect

Get IV fluids and update us on how you feel.

Gotta be honest, I didn't quite feel human about the first 8-12 weeks but look at me now-loving life as a trim person...I was sleeved 4years ago and would definitely do it again in a heartbeat!

Thank u for your honest answer-I think I'm more scared than anything because I think I'm doing more harm to myself than help because I can't keep anything down...and I'm just afraid I may pass out or die...silly as it sounds I just don't know what's normal to feel...And most days I'm just sooo depressed because I have no support...I mean my family supported my decision but none of them have had the surgery so they can' tell me what to expect ya know?

I understand how you feel. I'm four weeks postop and I was miserable for three weeks. I had the nausea and fatigue and couldn't get a lot of fluids down. Biggest thing that helped was my doctor told me to increase the nausea meds to every four hours. He also prescribed an inhaler bc I was so short of breath. Another thing that added to my misery was that I was constipated...milk of magnesium helped. Believe me, being constipated will make you miserable. Definitely talk to your doctor and nutritionist. I regretted this for three weeks, day in and day out. I didn't think I would get better...but you know what? Each day gets better.[/quote

Thank u for responding...I'm trying to remain optimistic about it all because I opted for the surgery after all due to my need to get healthy...I'm just a little scared that by not following the instructions to the T that I'm somehow gonna faint or die in my sleep due to lack of nutrition and not getting enough to eat or drink...if that sounds crazy please don't judge me...it's just that this is all new to me and I'm not sure if these symptoms are normal and I don't know if they ever go away....but again thanks for your words of encouragement...I'll just hold on to the fact that it does get better as u say...God bless u

yes id be looking at serious dehydration, that causes your symptoms exactly. How much Water are you geting in? what kind of diet are you working with?

What surgery did you have?

I had the sleeve and I was on the pureed food stage...definitely not getting enough water/protein due to the nausea and not being able to keep anything down...

Have you called your surgeon? They can give you something for the nausea and can check into why you are vomiting so much. That is not normal.

Being dehydrated itself can cause nausea headache and vomiting. You need some help with this and should not be feeling so poorly 3 weeks out.

I called the doc on call and she's gonna prescribe some anti-nausea meds...hopefully that does the trick

Let me tell you, I thought I was going to die too! I had excruciating gas pain, couldn't get anything down bc my throat felt closed, extreme fatigue, breathing issues, headaches, etc. Try hard with fluids bc I ended up with a bladder infection...and had to take antibiotics....no fun.

I absolutely felt the same way. In fact I would say to my friends, family, and doctor that "at what cost to me did i have this surgery?"

But it started turning around for me at the 4 month post op mark....Now I say "that i am so glad i had the surgery now". Please don't give on yourself. I didn't and now I feel like a million bucks....had surgery July 7th...lost a total of 79 lbs as of December 21st 2015...

I'm wondering if you are following your surgeons guidelines eating and drinking appropriately. Sounds like you rushed into surgery without careful thought and knowledge.

What does your surgeon say?

Glad to see you called your surgeon. Please do your best to drink fluids. Yes Protein is important, but dehydration will make you seriously ill. Once you get the nausea taken care of then you can begin to focus on the protein. To any other newbies reading this, please know you should not suffer. If you are miserable and especially if you are having trouble with nausea and vomiting, CALL YOUR DOCTOR asap.

I am 3 years out and I also regretted having the surgery the first month I did it, but honestly I feel we all go through a regret phase I can assure you. Now fast forward I am so thankful to have lost 120lbs and can't imagine my life without it. I eat normal now, just keep going it will be worth it!

Glad to hear you called the doc, I hope those meds help you.

I do want you to understand that the most important thing you put in your body right now is fluids.

If I were you (my opinion only), I would go back to step 1. Clear liquids and I would focus on sipping all day long. Little sips but literally every few minutes.

Dehydration will create this vicious circle in which you feel like crap. Once you go through a day or two of sipping those liquids, then add back in full liquids which will help get your strength back.

I would not go off plan and start eating soft foods because you are dehydrated. Liquids first.....then puréed and a week or so later then soft foods after your doctor clears you.

You will not die from not eating for a long time but you can die from dehydration in a much shorter period of time.

The nausea will in fact continue until you get dehydrated. If you feel like you cannot get a handle on your fluids go to the hospital so they can give you IV fluids and get you back on track.

definitely call your surgeon. At 3 weeks out I will still doing very soft solids and could only eat like a bite or two. Also, I took an anti nausea pill almost every day until 2 or 3 months out. It got so much better. Good luck!

I don't know if this will encourage you or not, but I had a very similar post at about 3 to 4 weeks post-op. I was pretty sick for several months (turned out due to a stricture) and even after it was fixed, I took nausea med off and on for about 6 months. Now however at 7 1/2 months post-op and 117 pounds down, diabetes in remission, etc., I can say it is the best decision I ever made. The first few months can be frustrating and exhausting but just know there is light at the end of the tunnel. You just have to get through the first part...

I think you should get support from your surgeon office, but I think you recognize anxiety talking. I am not judging you for the fears but you should know that NOBODY dies from the food restrictions those early months. Dehydration can make you feel like you are dying and if you can't drink enough (sip, sip, sip) request iv fluids. It is really hard those early weeks, don't make it harder on yourself by imagining starvation etc.

My mother grew up depression era and she genuinely believed that being fat, eating hearty were signs of good health. This weight loss journey has made me face some of thoze deeply engrained beliefs.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
