Meal / food help please!

Recommended Posts

Hi I am exactly one month out and my doctor has approved me for regular foods, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what to eat each day. I haven't been able to stomach Protein Shakes so I know I need to make sure I'm getting as much Protein as possible from my food. I've also been stalled for over a week now which is discouraging. I was hoping some of you guys could post what you typically eat each day for your meals to give me some ideas. I've never been good at figuring out what to eat so if I had some ideas I thought it might help me. I'd really appreciate any advice! Thank you!

Condiments are my friend, salsa, hot sauce, curry, whole grain mustard, low or no calorie flavorful add ins to keep menu interesting. oh and when i am tired of chicken i do same thing with salmon fillets or canned tuna. VERY rarely do i add a 1/2 scoop of Protein to my milk. hope this helps.

Have you tried both the ready-to-drink and the powdered Protein? I have a friend who gets sick off of the ready-to-drinks, but she can easily tolerate the powders.< /p>

at the beginning - tuna with a small amount of yogurt worked well for me (plus lots of protein). I added some herbs like Dill too.

Other go to "real food" for me was rolled up sliced turkey (or any sandwich meat) with string cheese. This went down well too.

Finally - try yogurt with soft fruit like kiwi or melon. If you use Fage it has the highest Protein.

good luck !

dinner 2 oz baked tiliapia w/ cajun seasoning, lemon juice etc to your liking

Snack: 1 Protein shake or colby cheese cubes or 1/2c of greek yogurt

I keep it simple and add foods slowly.

Monday I begin week 5 post op. I can tolerate chicken, Soups, a few crackers(they mush up really well when you eat them), but I don't have crackers very often as 5 = 10 carbs. I still drink the Premium Protein shakes, along with EAS Carb Control ones. I hate greek yogurt, but mix fruit in it and eat it once in awhile. Cottg cheese works, and I make pizza with the cauliflower crust, and can eat a small square. I found a Protein pudding, but it's expensive, so I only eat that once in awhile. I ordered some Liquid Protein, 15g per ounce. I thought that would help me get the protein quota I need, because I can't eat that much yet. I can't tolerate the chaulky chewable Vitamin, so I got that in a liquid too. I tried tuna fish with boiled egg in it(made tuna salad), it did not sit well. Not sure if it was the egg or the tuna. :) Hated coffee right off the bat, but I can drink a little now. About half a cup and I get done with it. I seem to be doing ok. I feel pretty good! People say they can see the weight loss, but I look in the mirror and see the same person as before the surgery. I can wear3 different sizes of clothes, which is odd, just depends on the brand I guess. I've lost a total of 50 lbs since I started this adventure 3/31/15, but only 18 since the surgery. I go for my 6 week follow-up on 11/10, and I hope to have lost some more weight by then. I hope he clears me for aerobics and weight training, I'd like to get some more weight off by the end of the year.

i keep hearing about this "cauliflower crust pizza". sounds wonderful and i am off all flours at this point. i am somewhere on the gluten intolerant scale, but not a serious allergy. where can i find a recipe?

here is another trick i use. ALWAYS eat at the same times every day. make and take a meal or snack with you to work or especially running errands. if you have a healthy something sitting next to you in the car (w/ your mini spoon!) you are less likely to make unhealthy choices.

Try stirring Protein Powder into other foods, if you are struggling with getting enough Protein at this point and can't handle shakes. I stir 1/2 scoop of vanilla protein powder into 1/2 packet of low sugar oatmeal for breakfast, and the same with Greek yogurt. I've used unflavored protein powder in Soup.< /p>

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
