Time off work? One week? More?

Recommended Posts

I was planning on taking one week off of my desk job. I'm hoping that everything goes smoothly enough for that. I am low BMI so possibly that will help.

I've heard of people taking a month off. I'm not quite sure how I could do that especially since I'm not planning on telling anyone the real reason!

How long did you take off?

@@itstimealready - I had the sleeve and have a "desk job" too. I am required to lift 40# so I had to be careful and NOT lift anything over 10# until I was cleared with doctor. I had surgery on Wednesday and went back to work not that Monday, but the week following....went nuts at the house. I should've gone back that first Monday. I had no gas pains, vomiting, etc. I am very blessed with my WLS and recovery.....

No Regrets!

I'm planning on taking 10 days off work. I'm a teacher. I worry about being exhausted!

Hard to tell, but I think a week to 10 days would be sufficient for a desk job. I'm retired, but I was bored silly after a week of being home. If I worked I could have easily returned to a desk job.

You will have to listen to your own body as each of us has a different response to surgery and speed of recovery. For me, I had surgery on Tuesday and went back to work the following Monday. I too have an office job and spend a good part of my day in meetings and on conference calls. Realistically I could have gone back on Friday (3 days after surgery) but it was the first day I was consuming anything beyond Clear liquids so I wanted to start the re-feeding process at home.

I will tell you that for most of the first week back I was more tired than usual by the end of the day. It takes your body some time too fully recover from the rigors and trauma of surgery.

You will get all kinds of responses to this. I too have a desk job. I took 2 1/2 weeks at home though I was working from home after a few days. I wish I had taken 3 weeks. I was very tired when first going back and I struggled with a lot of nausea. I had to leave early and go home several times. The thing you have to remember is that it is not just the surgery recovery but the new lifestyle. So you have to be prepared to be sipping Fluid often and pack your food to take with you, etc. If you can get longer off without an issue, I highly recommend it. You can go back at 1 week. Lots of people do it. But just be prepared that it can be tough - at the very least mentally as you adjust.

Yes, the new lifestyle is something I'm concerned about at work. that's all I need is to be on a call focused on something else and take a huge gulp of Water and then throw it up at my desk! Or worse! Lol

my surgery will be on a monday and they said i will stay overnight, the dr only does followups on fridays but they said the friday that week is too soon, so i wont be released for work until at least the following friday. i spoke to my supervisor (who had the r n y) and she advised that since that would put me coming back to work on a saturday (my scheduled work day), why not just take off til the following week. I have plenty of sick time stored up and was told that for fmla, its better to request off more than i need then come back early if im up to it, then to have to extend later...oh, the joys of working for a city

Taking 2 weeks off pretty demanding job but no heavy lifting so if I can manage to get my Water in and eat slowly I think I will be ok. Then again I only took off 4 days when I had my gallbladder done last year.

I plan to take off 8 days. I hope this is enough because I am stressing over this. I don't have the PTO to take more time and at the end of Oct we have several projects at work that need to be completed. I work a desk job so I am hoping it's enough time.

what would you suggest for someone who does a lot at work? I am a CNA at a Veteran's nursing home in WI. I am aiming to have my sleeve done at the beginning of 2016. I am (as of right now) planning on taking 2 weeks for recovery, but I also can't use FMLA until March (must be employed there for 12 months).

I was sleeved on 9/25/15 and took 5 weeks off. I'm using all my vacation & sick time. I work very demanding hours for a demanding institution. I made the decision to finally take care of me! This will give me time to get use to my new lifestyle & incorporate working out. So far, so good!

I recently had my consultation and asked if it would be possible for me to return to work in one week, he said yes. I am hoping to recover quickly because I have not told anyone at work. However, they will definitely know sooner or later because I never take off extended periods of time, unless it is for vacation. Eventually they will notice the weight loss and they will figure it out.....

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
