How did you deal with hair loss?

I know It can seem detrimental at times but it will stop and be over with before you know it. I thought it was the worst thing ever, 3 months later and I forgot about it. It's done. It's just a part of the rebirth..even babies have to grow hair! :)

Thanks for all the feedback. I was looking at just cutting it, but I was already thinning on top prior to surgery. I am very envious of those that started with thick hair.???? I am concerned that if I do lose 50% or more of my hair I will start to look ill. As I said earlier, It is already really noticeable without the topper. I am just hoping my Hair loss stops before the topper starts looking odd. ????.

To answer a previous question, I did spend $350 on this, but I thought it was worth it for my self esteem. ????

Here's a few variations I do with my hair. I roller set them to give them a bit of curl then play with scarves & in up. My hair is thinner in the front due to menopause and I was already taking Biotin before surgery. Around 6 mths my temples started to thin and I think the hair is slightly thinner in the front. So far I haven't caved in and cut. As long as I can style it and feel great, I don't think I'll be cutting my hair.

ETA: not sure why the top 2 keep coming out upside down. I keep trying to rotate them and it doesn't seem to help.

I have always has fine hair, but lots of it...but it was already starting to thin out before surgery from me being in heart failure, the diabetes and the medication I was on. A few months post-op and it went in to overdrive, I was moulting! Went and got it cut really short for the first time in more than 25 years and loved it. Now I'm growing it out again and it's just recently started to come right. It'll never be like it was, but it's much better.

@@MzB, you look fabulous!!

At 49 years old, I already had genetic thinning before WLS, so was pretty worried when shedding started at Week 5. Fairly soon after, I started Rogaine 5% for Women. I knew that the Rogaine wouldn't work on my weight loss-related hair loss, but might work on the genetic Hair loss. I've been using it for not quite 2 months, and I'm definitely seeing little hairs sprout at the hairline.

I also take Biotin 5000 each day, and always try to meet or exceed my Protein requirements (70mg).

Apart from being vigilant, I keep telling myself "this is going to be fine." I might see scalp in places through my thinning hair, but it's not the worst problem anyone's ever had. It will get better!

@@monique490 Not everyone but most people do. It varies in the amount and how long you lose it. I got all my Vitamins, Protein ect... And still lost it. I was taking 10,000 mg Biotin even before surgery to try to prevent but it didn't work ;(

@@momfromjersey22 wow, I guess I can only pray it doesn't but if it does, I guess I'll have to wear a wig, weave or just cut it short and rock it, lol

@@Elode I am only taking 5,000mg of Biotin, should I increase? I guess it's too early to tell if my hair will thin out or not.

I am a little nervous because I wonder if I am losing too fast. Don't get me wrong, I am excited about the 34 pounds. Anyone else think I may be doing something wrong? It's feel like its melting off.

@@monique490 That's up to you, it didn't do me any good. I didn't lose a ton, just enough to be annoying when I took a shower and it stuck to my skin...gross! My hair brush was scary looking but I didn't have any bald spots or anything.

I agree with @Elode. It's really a crap shoot and there doesn't appear to be much one can do to prevent it. I was also taking 10,000 mgs of biotin a day and met or exceeded my protein requirements. I've was getting 60gms of protein at 2 weeks post op and currently get a minimum of 100gms daily. The best you can do is mentally prepare yourself for it.

I also have gotten all my Protein in, Vitamins and take 10,000mg Biotin daily. My labs are all perfect. I am going through menopause so that could be adding to it.

Mine started falling out within 8 weeks post op, got really bad from month 4 to month 11 and now it has slowed but is still coming out. I had very heavy thick, course hair thank goodness.

It simply she'd like crazy, I have no bald spots but it is definately thin and you can see my scalp but it is not horrible.

It really is a crap shoot whether or not it will effect you,

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
