Stupid things people say when they find out you've had surgery....

Recommended Posts

Thanksgiving dinner last week was my first thanksgiving since being sleeved. I watched my family pile their plates high while I took a tablespoon and a half of stuffing with gravy, one bite of mashed potatoes and about 2 ounces of turkey. Naturally, two hours later I was hungry and ate another two or three ounces of turkey. Another two hours, I was reaching for the turkey again. My sister walks in and finds me digging into the turkey and says "Leave some so we can have sandwiches tomorrow!"

I reacted as I would have before surgery and wondered if I took to much. Then I realized how little I had. I told her that she ate more turkey at one sitting than I had all day and I wasn't making a dent in her 15 lb bird. I reminded her that I said no to my delicious homemade cornbread, the homemade pies, and all the other treats they had. I chose to make a good decision. She agreed.

The next day I went to her house on my lunch break. I got my 2 ounces of turkey and a bite of stuffing. I showed her the plate and said, "I'm eating you out of house and home!" She was offended and became defensive saying "I only made one comment."

I'm still hurt. She made me feel bad and embarrassed.

Sounds like she realized how insensitive she was being and was embarrassed herself. Serves her right. Good job speaking up for yourself!

After a friend of mine guessed what I did based on what hospital I was in, said to me "I hope you had the therapy that told you that your gonna become a sex addict and alcoholic now".

Where do ppl come up with this stuff. The next week he asked me if I was tired of throwing up yet. I proudly told him I haven't thrown up at all.

I think the worst for me is the silence after you tell someone you're about to have surgery.

I can just imagine what they are thinking.

And this is why only a handful of people will find out. My coworkers are judgmental know-it-alls and most of my family is in Germany anyway, I only see them every few years. For any health professional who needs to give me advice - come right at me.

I am in a long distance relationship. Someone said to me, "after you lose weight, are you going to meet someone local?"

::blinkblink::

Sure, because the reason I'm in a long-distance relationship is because I can't get a man that wants to see me more often since I'm so fat!

I ended up breaking off my relationship last week. I made sure to tell the person I talked about above, that it had NOTHING to do with me losing weight or wanting to find someone else!

I love being told "you aren't THAT bad" & that I should accept myself the way I am. The thing is - what they see is my squished in my girdle & since I am tall I hide my weight well. (Or so I am told) You would think when they knew I was up to 280 they would realize why I wanted to stop this train & get healthy now!!!

Exactly! I needed to stop this train!

3 weeks out and I love how every morning I wake up to my husband standing over my side of the bed in disbelief at how small my stomach is. Hehehehe. This is only 3 weeks. You just wait.

A family member said to me the other day..."you don't need to do this". I replied "well 5 different medical professionals are in agreement that I do and I believe them. "

I hate to hear there are so many mean people out there who would say such things. I would ignore them the best I could and not answer any ignorant question. It's not there body or life so you've made the right decision no matter what others say. Tell them to have a good day and keep moving. Your life's decisions are none of their business.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
