diet 80% and exercise 20% or is it ?

A lot of people believe exercise is only 20% of the success I disagree I think it's about 50. My argument is that when you exercise lots it suppresses your appetitte and keeps you burning calaries up to 18 hours afterwards and gives your body that great look. What do you think?

I was told that exercise is a great thing to do, but if the food choices and calorie reduction are not done, exercise by itself will not promote weight loss. In the past, when I have exercised, it did keep me focused on eating healthier, but not really on the calorie reduction aspect of weight loss.

I need to get motivated to exercise. I know it is good for my physical and mental well being. That being said, I have actually lost a lot of weight without exercising. I am not saying I recommend that though. I am just being honest.

I'm expected to exercise a minimum of an hour a day. That's according to the rules of my surgery team. That was started the first week post-op. I didn't have to do it all in one go, but I was expected to get in an hour a day. I'm 6 months out from my RNY and probably walk about two hours a day now. When I don't, I definitely see a difference in how I feel, in my appetite and in my weight loss. I will still lose some, but it definitely slows way down.

I think it's more like diet is 98% and exercise is 2%. Also, there is good evidence that exercise increases the appetite, not suppresses it.

Why not be open to learning new things?

Why not approach hot topics as though you don't already actually know *the* answer?

I've lost over 100% of my excess weight and I have not exercised postop at all. Sure, I have a physical job and active lifestyle, but it's no different than preop. So in my case, my weight loss is due 100% to diet, 0% exercise.

In my journey, I found it to be 95% diet. Exercise does increase the metabolism. My might be because i had to lose weight before I foundmy new hobby of running. Running allows me to not worry about what I eat.

Simply put and not to be wishy washy, but i think it really varies. But i think a combination of exercise and diet make this work. I know if i stop working out for a week, my weight loss slows and I really have to focus on my eating. But doing my cardio etc, helps me, and makes my eating easier. so its a mix of both, as to percentage. Couldnt tell you.

As Julian Michael says "you can eat your way through ANY exercise program"

Exercise is very important but as for weight loss...it's all about the food.

I don't agree with this part at all, or, at least, that is definitely not my experience. Exercise makes me MORE hungry, because it results in your body requiring more energy in the form of calories.

I had RNY done with mayo Clinic. And their philosophy is to just get moving. They say exercise in some way for lifelong success. However, they admit it will have little effect on weight loss. Nutrition is a major part of it especially in that first year. They tell you to exercise because when the effects of surgery wear off they want you to have created good habits. Exercise can keep the weight off later in addition to nutrition. After the first year I would agree with your 80/20 ratio. Think about people who have surgery and are basically immobile due to knee problems etc. these people still lose weight based off of nutrition alone. I was told that surgery resets the body's set point for weight and the new set point is decided without our help. So stick to nutrition and exercise the best way you can for lifelong success. Eat lots of Protein and drink a lot of Water and it shouldn't make you hungrier.

@@AussieSam I only eat Protein, and I drink 100oz a day LOL. The more you burn the more you require!

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
