Anybody older doing this?

Recommended Posts

I always thought that I could do this on my own and I did - several times. But I put off surgery for many years. But then everything kind of imploded, diabetes meds went crazy. Sugar levels, Menopause, headaches, narcolepsy, falling down, the shakes, and all these things led me to surgery. If it hadn't been for all this crap I would probably have gone the rest of my life "dieting" - I am glad that there is help for me to live a healthier life. Waiting for surgery in July or August.

Welcome to the site and best of luck with your surgery. You can learn a great deal from this site by reading and asking questions.

My first question for you. Can you define older?

I am 50 and was sleeved April 20 of this year. I know there are people on this site in just about any age group. I haven't yet seen any pre-teens, but that's about it.

I am older than dirt!

Seriously I am 54 and I know that I am going to wish that I had done this sooner. How is it going?

I am doing great and couldn't wish for a better surgery and recovery experience. Learning as much as I could pre-op really made a big difference in how prepared I was for the surgery and aftermath. The worst part by far was the anticipation and taking that leap into the unknown.

I was 55 when I was sleeved last July. I'm 10 months out and down 101#. It's definitely doable and has improved my health immensely. You can do this!! Good luck!!????

Welcome older one!! I am 54! I will finish my 6 month pre op required diet and exercise in August and I hoping to be sleeved in August!! I've lost 20#. BMI is 40.9.

I am glad to meet some people my age as it seems like there are a lot of 20 and 30 year ages.

Congrats on your decision and I look forward to sharing your success!!

Hello!.. I am 53 and just took the leap of faith on 5/11, making me 9 days post op????.. I'm happy to report I am doing really well-- not to say there haven't been a few days of emotional overload and about 100 " what the hell was I thinking" moments but I find they pass pretty quickly- am so grateful to have been this gift; an opportunity to have a do over with my relationship with food, learn how to take care of myself and become a participant in my life again!.. Best of luck to you and we are never too old to be the best we can be!!

Laura4923, Looks like we will both be done this summer. I am a teacher so I want to use my summer to recuperate. What made you decide to do it?

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in December. I hate wearing my CPAP...I am a nurse so I know the risks if I don't. I decided that my joints are killing me, I want to get rid of my CPAP and be healthy and active as I head towards retirement in 12 years. I work as a pain service nurse based in surgery. There are 5 staff members that have had a VSG, all are enjoying amazing health with no regrets! I decided that before I ended up with diabetes or high blood pressure I better make a serious change!

Hi, I am 56, almost 5 weeks out and doing great. I also have health issues. Arthritis in knees, feet, hip, and spine. Drs. wanted to replace a knee, but it is feeling ok. My back still hurts some but tolerable. I am down 20 lbs. I have worked in a factory for 36 yrs and have 9 to go. I'm sure the weight loss will make it better.

amoreno - Which state do you live in? I live in Indiana. Just made my July and August clinic appointments. The clinic should be able to submit everything to insurance after my August appointment and I am told I could have a surgery date a few weeks after that. I am so excited and can't wait to be more active. I had my knees injected with steroid on Tuesday and that has really helped me move a lot quicker! I need partial knee replacements. I am going to wait and see how I am doing with less weight to carry around.

I bet you are looking forward to school being out for the summer!!

Hi - I live in Massachusetts and I met today with the psychologist! It seems that there are endless appointments, y'all have been very supportive. She recommended a group that they call "The Hungry Head" as a support group. Like Laura4923 I also had to have a sleep test for sleep apnea, so I understand wanting to get rid of the CPAP - I couldn't stand the TEST! But I have been falling asleep at random times! I have also been falling down and my knees and ankles have taken all the abuse. I am actually looking forward to the surgery, because after being on every diet known to mankind I would like to "finish" finally - it has only been 54 years!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
