Hard to get liquid now. When I do swallow just a little, I feel like everything in my stomach and surrounding organs all cramp up. Anyone know if his is normal? The cramping

I definitely had that for a while post-op. It felt like my esophagus was constricting with every sip. Walkign in place while drinking helped me and I just took very tiny sips and waited for the feeling to completely subside before sipping again. That part is just super hard for the first little while, but you WILL get through it!!

What is the drain? I didn't have a drain...

It's literally a tube they insert inside you with a bulb on the end to drain off the excess fluids created during surgery and while you are healing. Not every doctor uses them, but they aren't uncommon. I actually wanted a drain because I had experienced trouble with a previous surgery and developed a really deep abscess as a result.

I may piss off some people here with my way of speaking and I don't mean too. But I am irritable and hurting and I do speak my mind. I am very realistic.
To have 85% of your stomach removed is considered major surgery and yes there is pain. I don't think it is normal to come out of the hospital doing jumping jacks and saying no pain whatsoever.. Who knows, I may be wrong, and so be it. But that is how I feel.

I don't think anyone will get pissed off, you feel like you feel. Maybe I'm a special snowflake, I dunno. I was sore but I wouldn't call it pain. I've had worse menstrual cramps to be honest. I could sit up and lay down by myself and walk to the bathroom and back. As for gas maybe my doc was just good at squeezing it out. I was walking in recovery because I woke up needing to pee from the IV fluids and I was not interested in using a bed pan. I'm certain I wasn't ready to do jumping jacks or anything but my experience was relatively pain free.

OMG....this is me. It's the worst. My hospital stay and after surgery experience was pleasant, no vomitting, or fever...nothing. But when it comes to drinking or swallowing I keep having this same pain Jamie mentioned right in between my rib cage. I am hoping that this dies down soon, so I can get into the swing of things. I just got home yesterday, and slept pretty good throughout the night. It ranges from the feeling of hunger to constriction of liquids. I am miserable with this.

I too hurt like Hell!!! I was taken off the pain meds early in the morning, but wasn't released till 6 hours later. At some point I got the hiccups and stretched my staple line. I had a 2 hour car ride home, and I could feel my staple line stretch at every turn, bump and stop. I don't think it would have been so painful if I had not gotten the hiccups and irritated Frankensleeve.

But I'd do it all again in a New York Minute (recently measured at 32 seconds)!!!! It was all worth it. ;)

Definitely sounds like you have the exact same situation I did. I had very minimal pain, no nausea, but that constriction right in the center of my chest with every sip of Water... it felt like my esophagus was trying to turn itself inside out. I have good news and bad news for you. The bad news is that sensation lasted probably a good two weeks for me. The good news is I'm 19 weeks out now and haven't experienced that for a VERY long time now. So it DOES get better. I am certain that it is a result of swelling and once the swelling finally goes down, it goes away completely.

Wow so sorry to hear that. I didnt get incision pain until 2 weeks Post Op (the local anesthesia finally wore off) but I did have a lot of gas pain, that was ridiculous especially straight out of surger but as I began to move and time went out it got better. I believe it really is individual, just have to hang in there. The ultimate goal of healthier living makes it worth it. Feel better soon.

*knocks on wood*

So far no Constipation and no diarrhea. I was discharged on Saturday, had my first poop on Monday and have at least 1 BM a day ever since.

I remember waking up in pretty bad pain on the right side where my largest incision was. I'm thinking that's where they cut the stomach and removed it through that incision...YOWZA that hurt when I woke up! As soon as I had pain meds pumping through me, I was fine, albeit sore. Then I got a Migraine for both days in the hospital. Go figure.

It seems i was really miserable at the hospital. The morning shift nurse would only come in to give me a shot or take vitals. Didn't ask how i was doing, if i needed something, did i need to pee...nothing. She was a young girl, possible fresh out of school , nothing but giggles. Not once checked on my incisions. The night nurse was older and more experienced. Classic nurse. I really felt abandon with the morning one. I would call to get help to get up to pee. I had a bunch of cords tangled on me plus my legs had that pumping thing to keep blood flowing. I was tied up all over. I called for nurse and 20 min went by and nothing. So i got pist, probably hurt myself making force i shouldn't have, yanking the plugs off the wall so i can go pee. I had a bad experience at the hospital. Really. Feel so good to be home,

Yep, had the same situation. So I unhooked myself. After using the restroom, thought to myself, "I'll just walk around a bit since I'm up already." Did a few laps around the floor, then realized I don't need any more pain meds...I just need to get up and move. I totally felt better off the drugs and out of bed. So while it was irritating that my nurse couldn't get to me...she actually helped me progress pretty quickly...

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
