Did anyone NOT tell their job about surgery?

Recommended Posts

So far I have got away with not having to tell them anything. But my one manager will probably ask because that is the type of person she is. Very nosey so she can gossip about people.

I work at a public library, its only part time so I am taking off on my own time missing hours and such. But I have told my boss, her assistant and another co worker who was the substitute assistant while the other assistant was out. lol. I secretly had some books about the surgery ordered and some of the ladies that work back here with me were talking about it and how they wouldn't have it done and how scary it is. I felt some negative vibes so IDK what to do. My job requires me to lift 20-25lb boxes of books some days. Should I tell them I'm having gallbladder surgery or hernia surgery or what? Plus I'll be losing weight and they will be suspcious.

My opinion, none of their business, I'd keep it to myself...enjoy the journey! :)

Telling people you had gallbladder surgery sounds great to me. It would explain perfectly how you can't lift much for ... as long as you decide to tell 'em you can't lift much.

Yea I am probably gonna have to have help lifting some stuff... I'll just have to tell a few people to put stuff where I can get to it. lol. Is it ok to bend over?

I do not have a date yet, goal is January. I have been open to my job and co-workers about my surgery. I work in medical so I believe it will help me to get this in their heads that I am having weight loss surgery, if problems do arise and I am unable to work or work less, I believe they will have a easier time processing it. IMO :)

I was open with my boss & a few co-workers and they've all been very supportive! I don't feel bad when I have to leave early for an appointment, because my boss told me "whatever I need!" I feel so blessed to work for the company, & the people I work for! No surgery date for me yet, after this month I still have three more doctor supervised appointments. I'm looking forward to the day I get to announce my surgery date! :-)

I didn't tell work. It worked out fine. I deserved some time off anyway.

I am a teacher, so I had to let my principal know, but I just told him I was having surgery - I didn't figure it was any of his business as to what kind of surgery I was having. I did tell the other teachers in my department - we are all friends and very close, so I wanted their support. I haven't started my preop diet yet, so I don't know if I'll get a lot of questions. Also, I'll have to tell my students since I'm going to be out 8 days, but I'm not sure yet how much I'll tell them - I teach high school btw.

Hi,

I am in the same situation. I am getting sleeved on 2/25 and have not told anyone- the only person who knows is my husband. Anyway, I am a middle school teacher in a private school. It's a bit of a fish bowl...everyone knows everyone's business. I have 40+ days in my sick bank....just going to use them. Don't plan in saying anything.

Best of luck!

G

I have told a few people but not HR. Just taking off some time. It is really no one's business. I do not need to be replaced. I teach at the university level and my courses are done.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
