Sleeved a year ago and stopped losing...need advice!

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved Oct 2013...I was losing right along for months and actually my doctor said I was above average, then BOOM...started to slow in May and have now lost nothing since July! I will gain 3-4 lbs, lose that then repeat the cycle over & over. I eat healthy..no bread or Pasta at all. Limited amounts of brown rice or lentils. Lots of Protein and fruits & veggies. I also workout 5 days a week.

I'm feeling very fat & depressed!!! My start wright was 360, down to 278, but truly have a long way to go. ANY advice would be so helpful!!! My doctor is great, but just praises me got how I've lost and no advice really as to how to jump start my wright loss again?!?!?

Are you counting cals? Try using my fitness pal and log EVERYTHING. There has to be a missing link somewhere. Go back to basics. No drinking while eating. Protein first. Do you drink alcohol?

I don't count my calories, but definitely don't eat too many. even if that was the case, I burn a ton of calories at the gym! I have always practiced no drinking 1/2 before or after a meal (or more). It's like no matter what I do....I'm stuck!! No alcohol !

Have you ever had your thyroid checked?

First ask your surgeon or nutritionist. Maybe try a reboot of the liquid diet for a week with Protein Shakes, Water, and broth. As always make sure you are drinking the recommended amount of water. Maintaining low hydration will certainly stifle weight loss.

I have absolutely no insight on losing specific to the sleeve.. but in general, having lost a few hundred pounds myself (and found all of them, of course!)... Log every thing that goes in your mouth. Measure and weigh; totally back to basics. I know I tend to 1. overestimate what I burn at the gym and 2. eat to reward myself for working out.

Also, if I don't drink enough Water I retain SO MUCH Fluid.

Finally - I don't know when you last had labs done, but if you're low on certain minerals, it can slow your metabolism.

I hate logging my food, but there's a (free) app called Lose it that works with Kindle Fire, I things, and android... and if you're connected to the internet, you can take a picture of the bar code on what you're about to put in your mouth - it puts all the data in. When I log, I lose. When I stop, I gain. Needless to say.. I've started logging in preparation for surgery.

Thank you so much, each of you...any suggestions are so helpful. Agree that it is a pain to count calories, but I'm going to try it! Maybe will help find that missing link. I have had my thyroid checked and it was fine. Also my surgeon had me do a barium swallow test to check for leaking or blockage in my sleeve. It too was fine.

Sometimes I feel like I'm smashing into a brick wall....I mean I'm eating healthy, working out, had sleeve surgery and yes I've lost alot of weight, but all this work not to come close to my goal!! :-(

When you start logging your food, pay attention to the carb counts as well. It may be that you are "carb sensitive." You might try a low carb diet [net carbs below 50] for a few weeks and see if that makes a difference.

I would stop counting calories. We all failed on diets that counted calories.

Count Protein, carbs and fluids. Those are the big 3 of success .

I agree with a couple of the posters above...Have a day or two per week where you track everything that goes in your mouth. I did this and realized the impact of those two extra cups of coffee (sweetened) I allowed and a little bite here and there. I'm horrible at tracking, so I do it periodically as a sanity check.

I am almost a year out and I haven't lost any weight in since August - 3 months. I do 80 minutes of hot yoga most days of the week and I hike or walk/jog. It's frustrating to not see the scale move. But I am doing what is within my control to make myself healthier - I am not a slave to the scale any longer.

Since you are working out 5 times a week, you may not be taking in enough calories to sustain the weight loss. There are studies that show that if you don't eat enough calories, especially taking in enough Protein, your body will hold onto the fat reserves while you build muscle. I would suggest that you make sure you log your food and calculate how many calories you are actually taking in.

So true about the calorie counting...went into fitness pal & it seems so time consuming! I really am conscious if Protein, Protein, protein and make that my first choice in each meal. Trying to make sure I drink enough Water each day, which I'm probably not! I only drink Water, unsweetened iced tea & a cup of coffee with truvia & sugar free Creamer each morning. I think I may make better snack choices maybe?? I usually grab a yogurt or some cheese or cream cheese stuffed celery....what do you all eat for a snack? I've cut out most carbs like bread, rice, etc....if I do eat potatoes or rice, it's just a tablespoon or two.

I eat alot of chicken, turkey and veggies. Yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, salad with some sort of protein, eggs. I try to change things up a bit with my recipes to make things different (last night I stuffed halved peppers with a mixture of seasoned ground turkey with onions, garlic and lentils. Topped with marinara & shredded park cheese...YUMO!!)

So glad we have this site to support each other!!! WE can only understand what we are actually going through!!! I have great friends I can talk to, but they all start with "OMG...look how much weight you've lost, you're so luck and I'm jealous". BUT they don't "hear" what I'm upset about...plateauing with all the work I put in! Ugh!!

Thank you all for being my true leaning posts!! :-) xo

I am in the same boat...gaining and losing the SAME 3 pounds! It is frustrating! I am considering going on a one-two week Protein shake diet to try to kick-start some weight loss again. ANYTHING to get it going. Let us know if you have any success!

Try Weight Watchers. Your stomach is small enough to deal real well with their program.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
