High BMI sleevers weight loss amounts.

Recommended Posts

I have about 350lbs to 300 to loose until I'm at a goal weight (200-150lbs). I was wondering who had a larger bmi and how quickly they lost it. My friend who had surgery lost a good amount of hers quickly then plateaued but she had less than 100lbs to loose so I feel like I can't really compare her journey.

I know others will respond but I commend you on making this huge life decision! I had/ have 150 pounds to lose and now I'm approx 60 pounds away from goal. You will lose quickly to start and then it will slow, and you will have periods of no loss, but please keep with it, don't become discouraged and you will succeed. Stick to your allowed foods, it's not a diet but a life plan, or at least that's the mind set that is working for me as the word diet implies temporary, but life plan seems permanent. Good luck and keep checking back in here!

Thanks Winnie, I decided to donut when I ran into problems with my gallbladder, as it really was my first big health problem associated with my weight.

My husband and I both had about 170lbs to lose when we had our sleeves done. He just hit his surgiversary and has lost 120. I'm currently in month 6 and have lost my gallbladder and about 90lbs since high. Both of us experienced crazy rapid weight loss at first, then followed by stalls that last anywhere from 2 weeks to, in my husbands case, 9 weeks. For the longer ones, that was a sign we were doing something wrong. The fix for the dreaded 9 week stall was to nix the full sugar gatorade that he had come to lean on as a soda replacement and go for g2 lower sugar gatorade. Most people will say this is a no-brainer, but its a perfect example of how silly things can sneak in on you when you're not being vigilant and careful.

It sounds like you're really serious about beating the weight for good. It's not an easy path, but for us it has been effective. And even though neither of us are at goal now, I have faith we'll get there with our tool and steadily working the plan.

Thanks for the tip, it's very daunting when you have an incredible amount of weight to loose. I wonder if it'll take the 18-24 months, like others.

Maybe 18-24, but I will say this... a lot of my many annoying and unpleasant side effects are from my body freaking out about losing weight too quickly. I know it doesn't seem like this is a concern at the beginning of the journey, lots of people get excited and goal oriented about losing faster than others or faster than average. But it's easier on you and your body, the slower you can go through the rapid change (if that makes sense?) because things like loose skin, hair loss, Vitamin deficiency and just general fatigue will ease up if you lose a little on the slower side of the fastest-you've-ever-dropped-weight-in-your-life.

Good luck to you and I hope we get to follow your transformation on the boards here!

I lost over 160# - according to my surgeon far exceeding the typical for a high BMI sleever.

Here is what happened - I started at 308 (BMI over 50) and like most people did pretty rapid weight loss initially. I was very compliant - exercise, tried to follow eating rules etc. Once I got under about 190#, my weight loss crawled to a halt. I had to do a serious "reset" to get to my goal of 158 - which took about 14 months from my surgery date. I had to do low carb, high intensity exercise - basically I "dieted" with the sleeve as my helper. Intially, the sleeve did more of the work, but as time goes on, it shifts to being alot more about YOU. I currently weigh in the 140s and have a "normal" BMI of around 23ish.

I don't mean to be discouraging or negative, but with over 300# to lose, realize that it will require alot of focus and effort as your body will just sorta get comfy somewhere along the way and your losses will stop and you will need to really focus on diet and exercise... i mean get a bit hardcore, to make it to goal.

From someone with a high bmi and had a lot of weight to lose, My ultimate goal is to lose 300 lbs. I am almost 11 months out and have lost 150lbs. In the beginning I lost weight very fast and recently have been losing less. I have had the luck of not having any major problems with my sleeve, my Hair loss wasn't as bad as I thought it thinned more than anything. As to losing the rest of the weight I've been realizing this sleeve helped me so much in the beginning that now the rest is more up to me and the choices I make.

You are absolutely right about the choices we make... Especially after a year out. After the first year I gained 10 pounds back. During year 3 I lost those 10 plus 5 more :) ! Keep on doing what you need to do.... You can make your goal !!

I have a super-high BMI and am waiting on a surgery date. I know that I am in it for the long haul and have no idea what to expect time-wise. I plan to set smaller goals mostly around regaining mobility and my life.

My bmi was in the 55 range when I started out. I was 312. I'm 6 months out. I find I have to exercise more. Like, 70, 80 minutes of solid state cardio now. I can't just sit on my couch and watch it fall off like it did to start. And mentally it's all me now. Apple or cookie. Apple or cookie, ya know? I still want to lose like 70, 75 lbs more. My surgeon expects 100 lbs from the surgery. I'm at 90 lbs lost right now. I want to blow past his expectations.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
