Roostertail2,

Do you eat greek yogurt? I know it is not as much Protein as the shakes, but it does have a lot and you get Calcium as well. My first 3 weeks were miserable. I couldn't stomach much at all. I was so sick to my stomach I had a hard time getting anything down. Somehow stumbled on the crystal lite pink lemonade (settled my stomach). Was able to do yogurt, ate it a lot. Had to hold my breath to get the shakes down. Now 3 months out, and I can drink them, so it really changes. Try again a

little later. Hang in there. It will get better.

Thanks Jodi I am eating yogurt and as high Protein mushy stuff as I can tolerate. Weighed myself this morning and the number still has not moved! The only weight I have lost was the first few days after surgery... So frustrating considering the minuscule amount of food I am getting in! Great thing is I actually am never hungry I just make myself eat a few bites because I know I have to. Hoping I can make it to sept 11 when I am released to real food and can eat Protein Bars. Already ordered a couple of cases of Quest bars so I am ready! I have a LOT of hair so hopefully Hair loss won't be too bad??

  • Im really hoping I don't either! I have very thick naturally curly hair. Its been my trademark my whole life - It could stand to be thinned a little but would prefer that happen via a hairstylist! lol

I would suggest you stay on the shakes until your Doc says your ready. I know it's a struggle but it's worth it. Hang in there and Congrats!

The biggest issue with not drinking the shakes is you aren't getting good Protein & you aren't getting that extra Fluid. Both the doctor & the nut said that in the first months that it was dehydration that was likely to send us back to the ER, that Protein Bar will sit like a brick. Your still healing stomach needs another few weeks to months before you even think about something like that. Talk to your nutritionist all your food should be moist right now, try finding some unflavored Protein Powder & putting it in your yogurt sprinkling it in unexpected places or picking up the protein fruit juice. You are severely malapsorptive still your body needs that protein just not in the dry bar form - the first bite might go down ok but you likely will suffer thru the subsequent bites.

I have not eaten the bars- just have them ready so when nut clears me. I have tried the unflavored powder and it's not unflavored. It makes everything taste and smell like baby formula.. Just can't do that stuff. Hopefully my body will last for another 10 days until I am cleared for solids. I am taking Vitamins like I was directed..

I'm down 20lbs so far which is ok I guess.. I just don't know how to get in everything I supposed to. Never been a big drinker so even Water is an issue. Most days I'm lucky just to get in 20oz. Then I'm supposed to eat 3 small meals and 2 Snacks while trying to down at least 60g of protein! Not able to do any of it so far! Lucky to get down 30g - 40g of Protein and that's thanks to the Quest bars. Snacks are out of the question since after eating my "meal" which is about 5 bites I am so full I could go rest of day without eating! I know I have got to get on a schedule it's just such a daunting task!!

I'm 5 months post op and my experience with Protein drinks has been funny. Pre-surgery I loved powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury, any flavor. Then post surgery the only Protein Drink I could tolerate was Unjury strawberry. Now, a few months out the only Protein Drink I will drink is nectar Pink Grapefruit. So bizarre. I recommend giving it some time and trying Protein Drinks again later. Also, look online for sampler packs of various flavors. I bought lots of them and then ordered the big tubs of the ones I liked...of course I still have vanilla and chocolate flavors from pre-surgery and I can't tolerate anything vanilla or chocolate now!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
