Do any of you eat pizza or hot dogs now that you are back on a regular diet? If not, then how do you satisfy that craving without messing up your band?

I admit I eat pizza as a treat. When I do I cram it with veggies. I have a large salad and one slice of veggie pizza. Or one pizza and three or so wings and celery. For me it's best to eat in moderation instead of omitting certain foods. I also incorporate fruit or veggies in ALL meals even treat meals. I also follow 80% -20% rule. I eat clean Breakfast, lunch and Snacks and eat carbs with dinner or swap it around as needed. For example Sunday mornings I make the kids a big breakfast. I will make pancakes and add fresh blueberries. Then lunch is salad dinner is tuna & veggies. In maintanance it's important to balance regular life too.

Hi Cherie, I think it's common to mourn certain foods but it's amazing as you go through all the stages of recovering from surgery then finding the green zone how we don't necessarily want what we craved before. Or we are ambivalent about things we once obsessed over. Having the appetite properly dimmed means it's possible to make different choices or to have very small portions. The idea is you're in the driver's seat versus feeling like your appetite is in charge.

pizza doesn't call my name anymore. A large Giordano's stuffed pizza used to call my name before WLS, and I would eat up to half of a large one. One slice of thin crust just doesn't do it for me. I'll spend my calories on a steak. Funny thing, I don't miss it at all.

Had pizza last night. 1 small piece with spinach, white sauce , mozzarella etc, and 2 chicken wings. Thats all I can eat at one sitting anymore. Occasionally Ill have a piece of pepperoni with cheese, but I limit pizza to once a month , if that. Im not a big pizza fan, sweets are my downfall.

I have always loooved pizza. Now it's one or two slices, depending on size, instead of the four or five I used to eat. I do like the individual size California Pizza Kitchen pizzas in the frozen section. They're about 400 calories and the crust is very thin and crispy so it's easier to eat for me.

My husband LOVES Giordano's. I guess it's a Chicago thing. Me? I actually like Papa John's. But now, that will be too doughy.

I guess it hit me simply because I'm still on the liquid post-op diet, the guys had frozen pizzas for dinner tonight, and we are ordering pizzas for my son's adoption finalization party this Saturday. (My husband is adopting my son tomorrow. It's very exciting for all of us)

pizza is my favorite food. I stopped eating it when instructed to which was the first two years post op. After that I've been eating it. A slice maybe two depending on how thick the crust is. I usually just scrape the toppings off though. Hot dogs I seldom eat. I have to have a taste for them. I usually eat half a bun and finish eating the weiner and chilli by itself.

Melted cheese did stick for a long time, but not so much now. I am however eight years post. I will say you gave to be able to listen to your band. Some days your band will not tolerate even the simplest things. Mine for example acts up when I'm under severe stress. My doctor says stress will tighten up your muscles, I vouch for that.

I'll second that.

Stress and illness has a huge impact on my band as well. There are times at work when I can't even get down a Greek yogurt. I learned the trick of putting vanilla Protein Powder in my coffee when this happens to maintain my Protein intake.

A friend of mine is on a low carb diet. He said he goes to the salad bar and makes a nice salad. Then he takes one-two slices of pizza and scrapes all the toppings into the salad. He said he gets his pizza fix w/o the carbs. I don't think I'd care for it. But he swears by it.

I rarely eat pizza (although I love pizza) and I very rarely eat hot dogs. I have problems with the Pizza Crust and the hot dog, as well as the bun. If I do eat a hot dog and bun, I have to eat very, slow and chew a lot. I have problems with bread and cornbread big time too (so I rarely eat that either).

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
