Best sleeping furniture / position for post-surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi, all! I'm inching toward my surgery date on 7/23/14, and I have a question for those of you who have already had surgery. Where and how did you end up sleeping or resting when you arrived home? I have a bed and a love seat, and honestly neither seem very comfortable when I think about recovering from this type of surgery. I wish I had a recliner, but I'd really like to make do with what I have. Any suggestions for how I can arrange what I have to be the most comfortable based on your experiences?

I slept flat on my back and both sides from the first night after surgery. Never had sleeping position problems...even in my waterbed with 2 dogs and 2 cats for company. Took about 2 weeks till I could sleep on my tummy just because I felt so bloated.

I'm a side sleeper but I couldn't for the first couple weeks. Was on my back in bed (no tv in the living room where the recliner is!). After the first 2 weeks, I propped a pillow between my side and the bed so my tummy didn't droop and cause pain (why I couldn't sleep on my side).

Good luck with ur surgery!

i didn't dig the recliner because my neck got a crick in it, but i have been forced to sleep on my back since surgery (4 days postop) due to an incision on my far left and a drain on my far right. can't truly side sleep at all. this is about the only true problem for me since i'm a dedicated side sleeper. i've gotten up several times each night just from sore back. using three pillows on the back and two to my right side.

A recliner when I wasn't in bed and when in bed I slept with a pillow under my knees to keep me on my back. I couldn't sleep on my side for at least 2 months.

Awesome. Thanks, everyone. Yes, I agree a recliner would be best. I always enjoyed relaxing and falling asleep in my old recliner. Best feeling ever! But, since I am sans recliner, I think I will make do with the pillows and blankets I have and hope for the best. It's nice to see all the variance in everyone's experiences.

I had no problems sleeping on my side and in my bed when I came home. Was hard to do in the hospital due to the drain, but after that came out, I was home free.

5 days post op....I am in a wide chair with footstool for daytime, and in a bed with 6 pillows to sleep. I did get a crick in my neck sleeping on night 3. I started using a travel pillow to support my neck and it's much better. I definitely think you can get by with the furniture you have!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
