Australian Bandsters Chat Thread

Recommended Posts

Hey Mickey, I have never been to Queensland, but apparently they are having a banding conference there next year, so maybe I will go. Don't know though because some bandsters you meet are fantastic, and some are the meanest, nastiest jerks, who have had a personality bypass.:) Sorry but I have to be honest here.

Seventeen kilos in just over two months! Good on ya. You are powering away.:clap2:

Hi Susannah,

Thanks so much for the encouragement.

You should come on up to QLD, it's a beautiful place. Even when the weather sucks it's still a lovely place to see. Please let me know when that conference is as i'd like to go as well. Hope all's good with you and yours. Take care,

Cheers

Hey Mickey, I would like to go to QLD at some stage. I think the conference was being discussed on the Yahoo Lap Band boards and it was tentitively being called "Living Banded". Has anybody else heard anything about this?

Hey Susannah

The "Living Banded" conference is happening about this time next year, on the Gold Coast.

It is being organised by Therese (aaronwoodlabradors) and Cath (switchsister), they are more active on the Ozband yahoo group. Although you occasionally see posts from Therese on the yahoo message board.

I had my first fill today! I'm a day under three weeks post surgery, and boy was I ready. My surgery was on a Thursday, and by the following Monday I swear I could have eaten the leg off a chair I was so hungry. I saw my dietitian on the Wednesday post surgery and she helped me with some great tips.

As of tomorrow I'm on normal foods, I have already noticed a change in restriction. My surgeon said to go back to him in 3 more weeks for another fill - earlier if I start to get HUNGRY!!! again.

I don't know if it's early days *luck* or not, but I can eat bread with no problems. I had a bit of a stick with some rice that didn't have any sauce on it, but apart from that bread has gone down fine. My dietitian said this may change when my band is filled more.

I'm happy that things have actually been going ok for me. My usual experience is that if something can go wrong it will, and usually the worst possible case scenario.

***

I was surprised at where the injection went for the fill. It's right off to the side of where I thought the port was, and probably 5cm away from the incision. My surgeon said he had to manipulate the port a little because I still had a little bit of Fluid surrounding it.

***

thanks all - just wanted to *unload* some info!

Hi Blyth, Yay you are banded now!:clap2: Your surgeon fills early.:) Mine will not fill until five weeks post op.

Thanks for the info re the conference. Will you go?

You are very adventurous re trying bread. I have not had bread since before I was banded. I have heard too many horror stories and I just don't want to go there!

Welcome to the club anyway.

I'm being filled at 4 weeks post off. I'm 8 days banded now but still not in the slightest bit hungry or thirsty (fortunately). I know of Therese from the groups you mentioned. I think I will go. Never been to the GC.

I hope you guys all come up for the conference - it will be so wonderful to meet you all.

I've been helping Therese and Cath a little bit - because I work from home so I've just been getting some information ready for them during business hours. Apart from that I have kept right out of all the "organising" stuff - I'm happy just to go along with the flow - and turn up to the conference!

****

Yesterday's fill was only 1ml - just a little tiny starter fill to see how we go. I have noticed a slight change in my restriction - yesterday morning I had a crumpet for Breakfast and was ok, but this morning I could only eat about 2/3 before I started to think I'd had enough.

What I have noticed today is that the food is "lasting" longer. I had my 2/3 crumpet at 8am - and at 12:30pm when I went out for lunch with some friends I still wasn't really that hungry.

I had some smoked salmon and potato pancake for lunch - two mouthfulls of the pancake and all of the salmon (about 1/2 a Protein serve) and I am so full - even 2 hrs later.

I like this restriction - I was seriously so hungry before that it was almost hurting!

Hi, I haven't been banded yet but I finally got private health insurance so if I get moved back on the waiting list I still only have to wait till May / June next year. I'm 160kg and I have a long road in front of me.

I've just got a couple of silly questions, Is it painful when you just get out of surgery after you wake up to drink fluids ie hot tea?

How much weight loss should be expected in the first year?

I honestly cannot remember any real pain post op. But some people report pain and discomfort for a couple of days.

For me, it has never been painful to drink (hot or cold liquids).

Your weight loss within the first year is up to you. Some people can lose a lot in the first year, and go on to lose the rest in the second, others lose all of it in the first year (not the higher start weights, naturally!)and some lose very little.

It really depends on you, your exercise, and eating.

Best of luck to you.

Hi everyone ! I can't believe how early your docs do their first fill.... my doctor is waiting just more than 2 months !!!!!!

My surgery was 15 May & my first fill is going to be 18 July.

I'm already eating solids & my hunger has returned. I am really looking forward to the fill.

It seems to me that everyone on the planet is getting their fills ages before me !!!!!

I would love to find out more about this conference.

Take care everyone.

Anyone on here in Brisbane (west side)... i'm at Oxley ;) ??

Hi Natz,

just had my surgery on 15 May.... no pain after surgery - was very comfortable. The only real pain was gas & shoulder pain for 2 weeks after. but it was easy to cope with. I'd do it again in a second.

Keep your chin up & look at the big picture - even though the light at the end of your tunnel is a little way away.

Take care.

Thanks Mark!!:)

Sometimes it is hard to see that light, I've been on the waiting list for 3 years, When I went on the waiting list I was 139kg now I'm 160kg.

And in that 3 years my marriage ended and I became a single mother, my ex husband started threatening me and I had to put a family violence order on him, which he breached countless times.

I guess I'm whinging, I just feel a bit down and a year seems so far away.

I know in reality it isn't but time seems to drag on when you are waiting impatiently :P as I am!!

Thank you for your answers I really appreciate it!!;)

Hi Natz, Sorry to hear about the trouble with your ex husband. It must be hard being a single mother, but hey need violence like a hole in the head right?!

I went through a fair bit of pain after mu op, but then I have other medical issues so it probably hit my body harder than others. The good news is that you recover pretty quickly. the band will change your life, and it will be worth the wait.

Mark, How are you cookie? Nice to see you posting here. Why do you have to wait so long for a fill? Are you a public patient?

I am going for a fill next week, as I have been starting to feel hungry again. I think my band has gotten loose from lots of weight loss.:clap2::biggrin1: Yay!!!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
