Australian Bandsters Chat Thread

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I wanted to start a new chat thread for bandsters all over Australia. Firstly the Melbourne chat thread now has so many replies that we are getting a lot of horrible spam, and secondly we want bandsters from all over the country to feel they can join in and chat on this thread.

Could we post on this new thread now?

Susannah

Hi Tara. I am well. I had a fill on Tuesday and I feel really tight. I had so much pain from eating one tiny salada! Agony! I wonder if the restriction will last? I have 4mls in my band now.

How are you? Amy? The family?

Susannah

Hey M, I got your pm. Thanks for it. I got home late last night after having dinner with my Israeli friends.

So you reckon the restriction won't last?

Eating is agony at the moment.

Cool, just checking ;)

I've always felt pretty restricted for a few days after a fill and then it eases off after about a week. As we lose weight (and you are going great guns with that), the band will be loser around our stomach cos there is less fat around it too (this is a GOOD thing :biggrin1: ).

I think thats why I am starting to feel like what was a "perfect" level of fill is easing, and that the fill can evaporate, I guess.

Its a tricky thing this finding the right fill level!!

Hi, Regarding tightness of the band in the morning, I read somewhere that it might be a good idea to drink a hot drink first to kind of loosen it up. Anybody heard this?

TGIF Friday!!!!!!

I usually have a glass of hot Water, or herbal tea before trying to eat in the am. I am not tight in the morning any more, but I still have my hot Water / herbal tea because... I just like it now!

But in the early days, it did make a huge difference to my ability to eat early in the morning.

Hi Susannah,

Thanks for starting this thread up!

Im from Perth, and must admit to feeling a little bit shy in posting on the Melbourne thread, as you all seem to be really great friends over there ;)

I too am one of those people that find myself really tight in the morning (and this is with no fill as yet!) and before I do anything I drink a hot cup of Water with a squeeze of lemon. I find it really helps

Hi everyone - I have been MIA from LBT for quite a while. Good to see you all, and thanks for the new thread Susannah.

Susannah - if you stay too tight for more than a few days (up to a week)after a fill, you need to talk to your doctor. You might need a slight unfill.

It is fairly common to be too tight in the morning. I am in the hot drink before Breakfast brigade, and then only usually manage to eat soft things for brekky like yoghurt, porridge, wheet bix. By lunch / dinner time, you should be able to eat solid food, albeit in small portions.

I am just recovering from a too tight band incident. I was in constant back / chest pain for about a week over Easter. I had 1 PB / vomit mid way through the week, and the rest of the time just killer pain. I was on liquids / mush for several days, but it din't help. It got so bad by the time I could get to the doctor that I couldn't lie or sit comfortably. I got in trouble for not getting unfilled sooner, but the timing over the holiday was not going in my favour.

I went in last week and had a partial unfill - 1 ml was taken out, leaving me with 2ml in my 14ml APL. The restriction crept up to too tight quite gradually - I can't put my finger on any one incident that triggered it off. I am going back in a couple of weeks to see about a refill, not sure if it will be 0.5ml or the full 1ml to go back in, I'll have to wait and see what the doc says. I need a refill - I am eating too much for a bandster!!! Yikes!

I'll try and check in here more often. I am in the process of changing jobs etc - I'll fill you all in when I have more time. Gotta go now and run some errands.

See you all soon!

Anna.

And Susannah, I am finding the new layout makes the pages slower to load up. Anyone else got that prob?

Ayup. But at least I can post again. I was unable to post for about 24 hours.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
