Tell me about your restrictions

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'm not talking about actual RESTRICTION like with the band...I'm not talking about foods you cannot physically eat, issues you have with certain foods, and what happens when you eat those things or too fast/too big/not enough etc. I have a friend who had the sleeve and she said she has to snack on small things all the time or she will get nauseous and I'm not sure if that's a sleeve thing or something to do with her other health problems. So, tell me what your issues are!

FYI - I have lap band currently but I am getting checked for issues with it tomorrow and if it needs to come out I'm considering the sleeve!

TIA!

I have the sleeve and I don't have any food issues really. I do choose to eat small throughout the day. I've tried lots of food and everything agrees with me so I have to be vigilant about good choices. I can tell when I need to eat but I don't generally get nauseous, I keep a ziploc with a Quest or pure Protein Bar and if I'm getting hungry and it's not meal time or I'm out and about I nibble about 1/4 of a bar And I'm good. I eat lunch and dinner like normal with my family must less quantities and cutting most of the carbs out other than fruits and veggies. I don't know if that's the kind of info you're looking for but hope it helps. By the way, I wanted the lap band about 5 yrs ago and was denied by insurance....so thankful for that!! I love the sleeve even though I was self pay. Best $20k I have spent!!

I'm only 2 months out and there are still a lot of foods I can't eat. Pasta, breads, rice, non cooked veggies. For me, I can usually tell as soon as the food goes in my mouth whether it will sit well or not.

I eat between 5-6 times a day and that works well for me. I am rarely hungry and have no cravings.

When you say 'sit well' do you mean it makes you nauseous or hurts your stomach? Do you get stuck? (Not sure if its called that for the sleeve).

Thanks!

Early on I had trouble with bread and refried Beans. Now over a year out I can eat almost anything. Refried beans are still tough, can only eat a few bites and sometime they feel like bricks.

I'm 5 weeks out today and I don't have any restrictions. If I eat too fast I feel like the food is sitting there like a rock but that feeling passes. I've tried everything except fresh veggies. I have no nausea. I even had steak and corn last night. Only 1.5 oz of steak and 1/3 cup of corn but I had no problems. I have had strawberries and watermelon for fruits. No probs at all. I've had pizza and bread and have no probs with those either. I even had bday cake a couple times and I had no probs! I think that with more time I will be able to have fresh veggies but I just feel it's too soon. I've been cleared to eat anything but I'm trying to take it slow. I'm loving the restriction that my sleeve provides for me! It has helped so much to keep me from over eating. I have been disappointed when I can't finish something that tastes delicious.

I am 5 months out and can eat anything. I choose not to eat Pasta, rice, potatoes or bread. I have never had nausea. I do get a fullness when I have eaten enough, usually 4 ounces of Protein and a few vegetables.

I am 11 weeks post-op. I can eat anything that I want, but I don't eat very much because I get full very fast. Nothing makes me feel nauseous so far. I too feel disappointed that I can't eat more of something that is tasting so good, but that is why I had this surgery in the first place. It makes me stop eating when I don't want to stop eating.

I'm 10 mths out and can eat everything and anything. Including bread, rice, Pasta, Cookies, cakes, ice cream (altho the first 6 mths or so ice cream gave me stomach cramps). I can only eat a very small amt (the beauty of my sleeve) so I'm hungry often. If it's a meal high in carbs, I'm hungry again in 2 hrs. If it's higher in Protein, it's about every 3 hrs or so.

Even tho I know I have no obstruction in there to cause me to get "stuck" like when banded, I still often feel "stuck" or like my band is still there. Happens when I eat too fast, normally. I also don't vomit anymore like I did almost everyday with the band. Now vomiting is a long, drawn out process that yields little results. It's no longer stuck in my esophagus, waiting to come out

So , so , so happy I had my revision and the band came out. I eat much more normally than I did when banded (coulodn't eat pineapple, pancakes, or pizza crust). Should I eat everything that I eat? Probly not. But it's why I luv my sleeve so much. I'm ABLE to eat whatever I want without worrying about overdoing it.

Good luck!

Restriction is largely from food choices (dense Protein and vegetables not slider carby foods) AND habitually eating small portions. Seriously if I start eating big, then I can eat big. So i have been accused of being mean for saying this but it's the absolute truth. ...just because you CAN eat "x" doesn't mean you should.

I have lost a lot since my revision and am maintaining at about 140...wear size 4 no stretch jeans compared to hanging out in the 28W range.

I just wanted to chime in on the "stuck food" issue. My surgeon explained that if your sleeve is done tight (like how he does it) your stomach opening is smaller than your esophagus, so food gets stuck if you swallow more than can slide right in. It's like a funnel.

That hasn't really been how I experience the sleeve. I never have food get "stuck" like that.

I was sleeved in October of 2013 and never really had problems with anything in particular except rice. It took about 6 months before I could tolerate it well. As long as I don't over eat or eat too fast no real issues with anything.

I have to keep myself in check because I tend to eat to fast, Then I eat to much and get a overstuffed feeling. I can eat most things but I agree with the poster that said just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
