I'm 4 weeks post sleeve and still have very little energy. Is this normal and how long should I expect it to last? I have 3 sons, the eldest of whom is severely disabled and needs 24/7 supervision and care. There's only so long I think my husband can juggle everything (!!) but I seem to have spurts of energy and then flake. My diet/nutrients are as advised. Any advice?

It takes time, which I think is different for all of us. Hopefully things will improve by 6 weeks. Remember to have Snacks between meals and get plenty of Protein and rest. Best of luck!

What are you taking in with regard to Protein and water/liquids? Are you severely limiting your carbs? Are you walking?

If you aren't getting in your nutrition, that can effect your energy. If you are't getting in your liquids, you could be dehydrated. As far as carbs - I went down way low because that's what I thought I should do...I was wrong (I felt better immediately upon increasing my carbs). Exercising - will give you more energy.

At this point I was only consuming 400-500 calories a day and struggling to get fluids in so, yeah, energy was a big problem. It gets better week by week as you heal and consume more. Once I got up to about 600 calories or so and more fluids my energy was more sustainable. Push the fluids, it really helps.. and the Protein. Good luck

Thank you all. I think I've been keeping my Protein and fluids up sufficiently but will keep closer check . I have dropped my carbs majorly so I'll look at that also Exercise-wise I probably need to do more walking when I have the energy rather than doing the jobs which need doing round the house! It's all a big learning curve isn't it?! Thanks again for replying

Yeah, I dont feel like I have much energy either. Surgery 3/20. I dont want to do anything. I am tired. I am doing better. Back to work. But when I get home, I just want to watch TV. I feel done. I am not working out or walking yet, No carbs at all, unless there in yogurt (yes there is some) but I am hungry and tired. UGH!

My thought is that being a caretaker can sometimes drain you of energy and I am thankful that you have had your husband to help. Maybe your other two sons can help a little until you are up to speed? I am 67, and I felt like the weight of the world lifted off my shoulders with the surgery, and I am able to finally get out and go places like never before. I hope the summer sunshine will bring some much needed breaks from the gray skies for all of us. You and your husband - I am happy for you both that you can depend on each other. I wish I could hand you a bouquet of daisies. I promise you will feel better. Linda

I had surgery 3/25 and I was lethargic beyond description until just the last couple days. One day I could only do a minute and a half on my nordictrak....i kept trying....now I can do 12 minutes....Yesterday and today I walked outside. My energy lasted a few hours, then I was fatigued again. I have found that if I keep Protein Water with me all the time, drink regularly, I revive some. My doc says my body is adjusting from burning carbs to running on protein. Protein is fuel for me. My brain keeps craving carbs and sugars, but so far, as long as I have protein immediately handy, I can get by the cravings. I just love how little it takes to fill me up, now.....

I'll be 4 weeks post on Thursday and have started to feel much better. I have energy until I try to exert myself (like wash the dog or carry groceries) and them I'm pooped. I think I've got some muscle wasting going on. One thing that hasn't changed with surgery? Finding time to exercise. Still haven't gotten there yet. Plans to oh to Water aerobics this Thursday. It's always energized me. Hope it gives me the kick in the butt I need.

I am just the opposite. I had no energy before surgery. I think it was all the junk and sugar I ate. I'm not saying I am a mean energetic machine but I have do have more energy post surgery. I also have not had headaches since surgery.

I'm so frustrated with myself. My energy level is so low I can't even do half of Leslie Sansone Walk Three Miles DVD! It's not in any way a hard and intense workout. In a few days I'll be four wks out. I take my Vitamins, get my Protein and Water in but it's not enough. Looks like I'm going have to add carbs to my diet but only from a fruit before I exercise. Before surgery it was a banana. I can't exercise on an empty stomach. Makes me dizzy and lethargic. Sigh, hope this helps because I have to get pass just walking.

I need to correct my last post. I was sleeved 2/25, not 3/25.

So I am 6 weeks+ out from surgery. My energy level is very low most days, but occassionally I get a good day of energy! Wish I understood the chemistry of food. I am totally eating all Protein (60-80 gms per day). My Water intake is still low...around 50 oz per day. I have lost about 30 lbs post op....going down slowly. Have 50 more to lose. I know if I did not poop out so quickly when I exercise, I would lose more. I am just grateful to be able to drag myself out of bed everyday...

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
