n support to my decision to have mine removed, I had no damage prior to my surgery and since then I’m a stage away from Barrettes esophagus.

I just don’t want to be that girl to develop esophageal cancer as a result of being naive pretending the band did not bring me there.

I know the band was causing the damage despite originally being told that was not the case, as the doctor states in the slide and his video it’s practically common sense when you think about it.

I just hope it isn’t too late for me and I hope other people are made aware of this information so they too can rethink the risks.

As it is, everyone who had the surgery is at high risk for developing esophageal cancer.. I believe that is what further studies will show… we are the guinea pigs and further research will reveal the truth but at such a high price.

I have an appointment to meet with GI specialist again once my band is removed, hopefully there hasn’t been much progression since my last visit with him.

More patients should know this and be made aware of this prior to having the surgery done. As I said, I would guess eventually these surgeries will no longer be an option.

any and all WLS can and do have complications and some can live long lives with no issues what so ever (i hope that is me)…..but we all (who had WLS) signed paperwork (and hopefully read) the issues that can/could/does/doesnt happen…..its major surgery

You are referring to the band and stating for everyone to rethink WLS. You should post this in the band section. We all clearly signed paperwork with risk and complications and so forth. I remember mine in one section stated there are risks associated with the surgery and some may be unknown. Well, guess what? Five months out, lost over 100 pounds and I have to go in for revision surgery Tuesday, but I'm not here telling ppl not to have WLS. I have no regrets and know what I signed up for, as should have you when you signed the paperwork. I feel your pain but I don't believe in the semantic posting warning ppl to rethink surgery. You may want to reword and repost in the band section and really watch the way you approach the matter. Best of luck to you

All i'm saying is studies are now revealing that the surgies for BAND & SLEEVE are proven to have caused an increase in esophageal cancer. Have the surgery if you want, it's most certainly your choice.

I just think not everone is considering this and i wanted to do what I could just to share it with folks...

yes there are risks for everything, but sometimes afterwards the risks are so great they stop prescribing or performing the procedures that caused them...

I'm just sharing the info I found and my experience, do what you will. I am only trying to be helpful.

I've bad the surgery, surgery again Tuesday, I know how to read, I know how to sign my signature, I read the damn paperwork and so did everyone else that has their surgery, they know the risk, they agreed to them, they signed the paper. Simple as that. Now that I mentioned the sleeve you adding the sleeve onto your lap band comment. We all know how to read and sign the papers and agree to the surgery or not. Therefore we understand the risk of complications. This isn't some magical new complication your speaking of so I just don't see the purpose of posting about it. Taking being bored to a whole new level.

Harringm13, how many threads are you going to high jack with this info? I'm sorry you got this diagnosis, but there are risks to everything. We all read the pros and cons and everyone should be aware of their particular risk factors. However, there is no reputable evidence showing that WLS contributes to esophageal cancer and gastric sleeve and gastric banding are in no way the same or similar surgery. GERD is a risk factor for esophageal cancer, but guess what? Most morbidly obese people already have GERD. The risk of cancer is greatly increased in every obese person, that is a fact. The benefits of losing weight are enormous, remaining morbidly obese is a death sentence. Please stop trying to scare people away from a life saving surgery because of your unfortunate luck.

You made threads in several forums your creating a kind of panic topic.
I get it’s a big deal dealt with my own cancer issues before 3 times (not related to wls) and have had both sadly people die from cancer and survive cancer in my family and friends so I know it’s a big deal.
Which is why to me making three threads on it is not a good idea it’s a scary thing for anyone to tell all of us we are doomed by having this op or doomed if we don’t reverse it.
Pretty hard to do for sleevers as there is nothing to take out and put back ours is a none reversal op can’t put back the part they threw away.
Everyone appreciates information everyone likes to know what they are getting into but the info is out there if you look for it and just like with everything you can look at 10 different studies and links and find 5 different view points.
People pay for medical studies to prove or disprove things not all of them are 100% unbiased and clean results even if they say they are.
If you took a poll of everyone on this site the percentages of developing cancer because of a wls would be far lower than the percentages your giving in these studies more than likely by a hell of a lot more people than they have listed.

Oh and 1 of my cancer scares was actually a result of me being so overweight and it effecting me the wls actually turned it around naturally without external treatment so maybe I should post that wls curse cancer as it cured my borderline mutations from becoming full blown and that’s from my own personal experience not a study I red online.

thanks haringm ....but most of us are very happy with our sleeve..and w all have to die sometime...many get cancer without the sleeve....

so lets be optimistic and take care...never ignore any strange symptoms...follow doctor's orders and so on.

Quality of life definitely improves...I am just 6 weeks out,but feel like a new person..i am slimmer,my arthritis is less,BP gone I am a happier person.

I am 9 days post op Sleeve and never looking back....how could I? I'm 16 lbs down and feel so thankful for our community here. I have read and re read prior to surgery and walked in the hospital confident because of our connectiveness and giving help to one another. Wow, talk about misinformation. I've read dozens of meta-studies of sleeve research and the incidence for cancer actually drops dramatically. The correlation between gastritis and sensitivity to stomach cancer shows, yes, but stomach acid is managed if your post-surgical protocol is followed. MOST people have an h. pylori (bacterial) infection that is correlated to stomach and esophageal cancer.

No medical study I have seen offers a conclusion or even insinuation that the gastric sleeve (performed since 1881) leads to cancer.

Please don't shout fire in a crowded room because you thought you smelled smoke.
