I personally went to dr. Ponce de leon.< /p>

I had an amazing time there with a great team. I was super taken care of.

His cost was $5,500 + air fare.

I highly suggest you look into him.

I was sold on Mexico the monent I looked into it. Not sure what would keep you from there?! I had better care there than any hospital here. 1 nurse to every 2 patients. Private hospitals. They want their patients to be well taken care of so they get referrals.

I can get you my coordinators info if you want it. I even got to skype with my surgeon prior to going,

SLCmommy5, I cannot tell you personally about all of those drs but I did see a negative post recently regarding Dr. Ortiz. I'm going to Dr. Illan and am part of his private Facebook group, I encourage you to check it out, Team Illan, there is a woman who recently took her daughter down to be sleeved and just an overall good group of people who are sharing their experiences daily. As with all surgeries there is always a possibility of complications but I have heard of too many with Dr. Aceves. Just a personal decision I would not choose him. Out of the ones you listed I would go with Dr. Alvarez, however at the end of day I felt most comfortable with Dr. Illan and his team. If you have any questions, the Dr will even arrange a skype call with you. I decided to go with him based on his reputation and qualifications as head of ER Trauma. Everyone has to go with their own gut feelings. Should a complication occur I feel good about the fact that Dr. Illan is qualified to handle emergencies. Good Luck!

Tiff, what kind of complications have you heard of with Dr. Aceves? Just curious, I have done a ton of research and have come up with really mostly great experiences with him, and have heard his complication rate is extremely low. (With the exception of one... And nobody can seem to bring enough facts to the table to get the true story with that case.)

Anyway, I am just wanting to know so I can do more research about him!! I am scheduled with him next month and want to be sure I know as much as I possibly can! Thanks!!

I can't comment on the other surgeons but just wanted to let you know that personally Dr Alvarez and his team were fantastic and if you choose him, you really will be in very good hands.

Jen40 I have heard mostly good stories about Aceves as well but just a few that have really scared me. One user anabanana has a leak which has caused so many complications. Again I think he is skilled, and complications can happen with any doctor. Its just scary and we have to go with what we feel is the best decision for us.

Please investigate and consider Dr. Quinones. He was absolutely fantastic, he is someone I would trust my child with.

Dr quinones was my second choice. Went back and forth between him and dr ortiz at the OCC.

I was sleeved with Dr Alvarez. The best care I have ever received. Zero complications. 20 weeks out and down 101 pounds. I could not be happier. Good luck with your decision.

As far as skills, I believe these are all good choices. And of course everyone on here is going to cheer for their own surgeon. Since you 've narrowed it down, I think you and your daughter should try to have a personal dialogue with each of these surgeons. Find which one you both feel the most comfortable with. Don't forget to ask about their postop support programs as well..... For both medical and emotional issues.

I think now that you have it narrowed down you need to speak to each doctor. You have to be accepted by the doctor and some may not be comfortable with your child being a teen and not accept you because of that. All you listed in my opinion are very good surgeons. Keep in mind Dr Ortiz doesn't allow the support person to stay in the hospital with the patient. That was a deal breaker for my husband when considering him. I noticed a lot of complications with Kelly.

He was, honestly, better than any US doctor I have been to.

Santa Fe is small - only 3 patients at a time. Never more than 3 surgeries a day.  There is a translator there 24/7.

Dr. Quinones actually comes in and talks to you every day.  And they still call me (surgery in January) about once a week to check up on me.

I cannot tell you how pleased I was with the care I received.

Thanks for keeping us updated on this.  I'm curious to know how it all works out for your daughter in the end.  I think everyone's brought up good points, and I know that if I had had access to the technology and the surgery when I was 13 I would have jumped at the chance.

Thank you and good luck on your daughter's journey.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
