Banded this morning 2/18- where's the pain? ;)

Recommended Posts

Hi again- thanks for all the advice! I am just so surprised. I can't believe my blessings. I went in for banding today- by myself because my wife had to work. I was so nervous- even updated my will last night. Can't believe how smooth everything went. My main concern was that this particular surgeon and practice is strong arming everyone to get the sleeve, which I believe is so that there is no long term patient follow-up like the band requires, and so they don't have to deal with your band idiosyncrasies. (Just my humble opinion, not trying to flame anyone but I guess I just did.)

In fact, I kept getting "haven't seen a band in a long time- wow" from nurses and staff as they came in to make the pre-op rounds. In any event, everyone was wonderful. Surgery was 1:15- turns out had a large hiatal hernia- no wonder I had been coughing every night for 3 years. Thus got 2 for 1 Tuesday special :) bates of Tuesday Tacos 2 for 1!

Woke up in recovery, sat in bed for 10 minutes, felt zero pain, got up went to the bathroom, felt zero pain. Got dressed and went home 20 minutes later. Have not slept, no pain meds, drinking fluids and doing the gas strips. Feel no gas pains. Feel no pain at all- keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Walked around the grocery store for an hour, did some shopping for the family, now just sitting up watching tv- no pain at all. In this was a blind study, I would totally think I was the placebo patient!

Thanks again for all the advice- looking forward to talking with you all more as I journey down this new path. If the pain comes, I'm ready and waiting- bring it on. Nothing good in life is ever easy- accept all the excess food I thoughtlessly ate over the past decades!

Congratulations! Hope everything keeps going as smoothly as it has for you so far. Gives me hope for my own surgery coming up soon.

Congrats on the surgery!! I was like you last Thursday when I had my surgery - no pain...However, my other shoe dropped yesterday and today - a lot of left shoulder pain, soreness, and headaches to boot! I did go back to work already, so maybe that's a contributing factor ...hope you stay pain free!! :-)

So sorry...didn't mean to worry you...If it makes you feel better, I think I am going to much and am getting dehydrated and worn out...my best piece of advice is to take it easy even if you think you can leap tall buildings... :-)

I didn't experience any pain either-went in for my surgery by myself, got a ride home that afternoon & was up and about entertaining & cooking for my sisters who came over to visit the very next day...had the procedure over my spring break, but really could have worked if I had to, easy peazy- you'll be fine! Good luck to you on the new start!

That's wonderful news that you're doing so well!! I was banded yesterday (17th) and am having some discomfort, I believe its where my port is..right upper quadrant of my abdomen. I wasn't expecting it to be there at all but I'm sure I just have to give it a few more days. Where was yours placed? Sending you well wishes and hope you continue to heal quickly!!!

Congrats to you. To answer your question, I honestly have no idea where my port is. Tries poking around and don't feel anything. Also have about 5 bandages over sterri strips. Guess I should know but never asked.

the port is generally behind the largest of your incisions. if any of you do get some gas pain you can feel it just about anywhere, lay on your left side this helps the most. I wish all of you speedy recoveries and I want to welcome you all to bandster world.

So happy for you! Isn't it great to have it over with -- all that anticipation. I was very surprised at how much easier it was than I thought it would be. I had never been an overnight patient in a hospital before and while I was very excited and feeling positive beforehand, I was also pretty nervous. Now at three months+ out I can hardly remember anything about it. I'm with you on the reasons for the preference doctors and insurance companies have for sleeve instead of the band -- it makes me feel lucky to have gotten my band when I did as it may be getting more difficult to find places to do it.

Congrats and best of luck to you! I am on day 5 post op and it's been hard for me. Today is just a little bit better and I'm starting to regain some strength. I do love the fact that it doesn't feel like I did 1000 crunches anymore when I sit up. Oh and my port is in my chest. It has not given me any problems though. It just swells up during the day.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
