January fitness challenge

Recommended Posts

Hey there everyone! Looks like everyone is doing great...keep up the great work!

I have been staying busy, but have been getting my walking in every day. So far for the month I am at 41.85 miles.

Today my wife and I took a nice hike thru Lake Bistineau State Park. It was a beautiful day to be outside and on the trail. Even saw some deer. Here is a pic my wife shot of me without me knowing lol.

Fiddle - is it normal to be "up" almost a pound the morning following a brutal lifting session? Is that Water in the torn muscles?

Yes, that is most likely water being drawn into the muscle to assist the rebuilding of muscle Fiber.< /p>

Omg... I love it! Just can't seem to find a big enough block of time to do it! So after my discussions the other day I remembered I had a rebounder (mini trampoline) and some resistance bands in storage. I went and got them and I've been doing little 5 min sessions on the rebounder several times a day( which my kids think is hilarious)! And so far mostly just playing tug of war with the bands with my son. :)... I can find time to do little mini things throughout the day.. like a quick walk around the block or some calestetics here and there but a full out work out routine is just few and far between right now. Thanks:)

Just checking in, I'm still getting in my walking, and also the eliptical and recumbent time, but work has been so crazy that I've had to cut back on my yoga and strength training sessions. I don't know how you all do it. I get up at 5:30 every am to get in the walking and I've been doing some fast intervals to keep up the heart rate(trainer says intervals are the way to go!) I'm so glad that I have my gym equipment set up in the basement because I have no excuse not to use it. It's harder to block out the time to go to the gym, but have promised myself I will go twice a week to get in one yoga class and one strength session. My trainer is so cool, she says just do what you've got to do and don't stress about the rest. MTD-52 miles walking, 4yc, 3 ss, 20 min/day either eliptical or bike.

Butter - the foot is no bueno, i think your original assessment is probably accurate or at least mostly the case, plantar f. Every step hurts, even though I spend quality time every night rolling out the arch with a tennis ball, not a happy camper!!

Ouch. Sorry globe. I'd also try making fists with your toes, on carpet preferably. Really strengthens the tendons of the arch. Also, lots of calf stretching.

Lastly.....I dunno if you can get these while you're deployed.....but my wife swears by these. The look like toe less socks, but they are super tight....almost like compression socks. I recently got a pair and I do like them.

Did a last long run of 11 miles before next weekend's half marathon. Took an ice bath when I got home. My knee and hips are hurting!

Run: 36 (Goal: 60)

Walk: 28 (Goal: 60)

Bike: 9 (Goal: 30)

Total: 73 (Goal: 150)

How did you like that ice bath? It's no fun is it? But it does wonders for inflammation. Is your half marathon this weekend? Congrats. I'll be running a half marathon this weekend too. Best of luck to you.

It was no fun at all! Thanks for the suggestion though, I did feel better afterwards.

Half is on Sunday. Can't wait! Good luck to you as well!

Butter - I do all of those things, the foot-clenching, the ball-rolling, and the toeless foot wrap, I have them from dancing. Tonight my trainer and I will be doing cardio for the first time since starting the compound lifting, we'll see what my foot is able to do....

update: about to go do cardio with the trainer, be end of night will have only consumed 650 cals, I went a little berserk last night with some cashews so I think it's okay, plus everything at the difac tonight was highly delicious and highly inedible - buffalo chicken bites, fried mozzerella sticks, GRILLED cheese ... BTB - how is your sprained / broken toe doing? Are you going to manage for the 1/2 coming up next weekend? Hope it is getting solid again.

Doing fine fiddle. It's tender but it has not stopped me. I did 5.5 miles yesterday and 5 more today. I'll do the 1/2 this Saturday, the only question is whether or not I'll wear the vibrams. I did wear them today and they felt great. I just have to be careful not to stub that toe right now cause it's hilly sensitive.

So far 57.6 miles running for the month.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
