So in my latest visit to my NUT last week, she made this comment that I LOOK like someone who has lost weight too fast, that I'm sort of gaunt looking. WHAT THE CRAP?! Then she said "well, maybe it's just because I haven't seen you this skinny before".

So of course now I'm staring at myself constantly, thinking that I look like a skeleton in the face who's skin is literally sliding off of it. Yeah, disgusting I know.

I'm completely paranoid! I don't want to look like a 90 year old deathly ill woman! Part of me is like "give me some fat back!" I'm using every firming/toning lotion, cream I can find. Has anybody else felt they look like this or had someone tell them this? I thought I looked pretty darn good! My face does look a little hollow to me, but I've been staring at my fat face for 10 years now, so the difference is a little spooky.

kchristian

when a "normal" person says something like the above comment, she/he is maybe/probably not thinking before they speak

still no excuse - ignorance is bliss??? i don't think so

but............

for a professional to say something like "gaunt looking"???

wow, that hurt :(

dumb/cruel thing to say - even though i'm sure she didn't mean to be insensitive - but she is/was

your profile

Height 5 feet, 7 inches

Starting Weight 280 lbs

Current Weight 197 lbs

Surgery Date May, 14 2013

Goal Weight 150 lbs

Weight Lost 83 lbs

being a "shrimp" at 5'3 ;) i've always envied (msp?) lovely tall girls like you :)

there is a thread on the board concerning taller people - their weight et al (sorry don't know how to find it  )

people give their weights, size et al

i'm sure you don't look gaunt/hollow

"maybe" recheck your goal weight with others

all peoples body build, medium et al is different

but.............i'm sure you are looking absolutely maaaaaaaaaaaaarevelous

don't start staring at yourself, 2nd guessing yourself

paranoia is no fun - i keep worrying about that

83 lbs down is wonderful!!!!\

keep up the good work

kathy

congrats

I always get " you look pale " Yes maybe I am in your opinion but I am becoming a thin and healthy pale so eat my dust!!!!!!!!!

Those comments just add to our own misconceptions about how we see ourselves.....

I would rather look pale then fat!!!!!

WTH???????????????????

I'm sorry your NUT isn't as supportive as one SHOULD BE!!!!! For someone in her position to make a comment like that strikes me as unprofessional.

I saw mine the other day and I saw a wedding picture on her desk. When I looked at her picture---I thought to myself: "I'd bet that she's never been fat a day in her life."

Unless you've been judged by complete strangers as lazy and undisciplined, I don't think you can TRULY comprehend what people in our position go through on a DAILY basis. I can't stand negative comments to someone who has endured what you have.

Know that in the eyes of God--we are ALL BEAUTIFUL :)

Maybe she meant it as a compliment? ????????? If not, I hope she get's Beotched slapped by Karma.

Thanks everybody. It just planted this little seed in my brain and of course I'm the type of person who is going to Water that seed by dwelling on it.

And hey - she might think I look "gaunt" because let's see - I'm exhausted 24/7 (blood work next week for 6 mo follow up). I can sleep 9 hours without waking up and be pooped the next day. I take all my Vitamins, get all my Water + some, and get all my Protein, so I don't know what the heck is going on with me.

I have a 2 year old (enough said), plus 2 teenage step daughters (18 & 17), one of whom is pregnant and the other likes to get caught smoking pot. Soooo.....yeah....

Also - my collar bone is starting to show a lot. I thought that was a GOOD THING! HI COLLARBONE! OH HOW I'VE MISSED YOU - FEEL FREE TO POKE OUT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT! :) (shoulder blades, ribs, pelvis - you are welcome to join the party any time)

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
