I'm two days out, surgery is Monday and I just couldn't hold out. We went to a cookout and I just COULD NOT resist a hamburger patty. Please tell me someone else had beef two days before surgery?

I guess it depends on your surgeon but I don't think you have messed up. My pre-op diet is 3 shakes and a lean cuisine for dinner per my surgeon and he also said if I had a special function or dinner to goto during pre-op that is was ok to do so. Being 2 days away from surgery has got to be so exciting !!! I can't wait to be on the loser bench !!! :P

You should be fine. My doctor let me have lean meat and fresh veggies every few nights. Good luck with your surgery! :)

I had a gyro (or 2) a week before surgery and I survived! You'll be ok but yeah...don't do that again. GOOD LUCK!

No one will condone it - 'cause you know you're not supposed to. But, its a very minor slip and as long as you aren't making a habit of it, you should be fine. :)

(says the woman who had pizza, chicken tenders and a coke the night before hers!)

Look, you will not see me judging you!! I started my pre-op diet on Friday, surgery Nov.1 and I am having a really hard time. I am not hungry but this diet is playing with my head big time. I really don't think you have messed up, as I am allowed to have 3oz of lean meat for dinner. Maybe that burger was 90% lean lol jk. We are all human don't be too hard on yourself, and finish strong until your surgery!! Good luck!

I cheated 3 days in with eggs, 3 days before my surgery, I chewed and spit a double cheeseburger and onion rings from Culver's. And I had 6 Diet Dr. Pepper's the day before. I think you'll be fine :)

Are you on liquid only? If not I don't see what the big deal is. It's Protein. I would say the fat content might be higher at a cookout because they probably aren't going to spend the money on 96% lean beef. I could have hamburger meat just had to be lean for the whole "liver" thing :D I'm no help but I would think you are ok. I was only all liquid 24 hours before.

The idea of the pre op diet is to drop weight to shrink your liver. period. What you are actually putting in your stomach really doesnt matter until the day or so before your surgery. pre op instructions vary by surgeon. So eating something you weren't really supposed to have is not that big of deal, as long as you are still losing weight.

I think you'll be fine. Certainly make sure you don't have anything the day before. You want everything to be empty/moving in the right direction the actual day of surgery. But a burger today will have already processed far past your stomach by your surgery date, so as long as you don't make a habit of it, you should be fine.

As you can see, many people have been just fine having cheated on their pre-op diets. I am in the middle of mine right now. However, it's still major surgery and the doctor gave you the pre-op diet for a reason. Just disclose to your doc what you did to ensure he is prepared for anything that might be there when he opens you up.

Just because others did it and were fine doesn't mean it's not somewhat risky. Pls take care of yourself by letting your doctor know, and he can decide how best to keep you safe during surgery.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
