Clothing expenses after surgery

Recommended Posts

I for one am dreading the day I have to shop for new clothes :)

Gah you and me both. I'd rather have flaming bamboo shoots stuck under my nails. If it's not books, electronics or bath products, I'm not interested in shopping for it.

Can I ask what people did about suits? I have suits for another 10-15 lbs down but then I'm out of my closet shopping options. I don't have to have insanely expensive ones' date=' but they do need to be dressy looking jackets, blazers, skirts, pants, shells, etc. where can one find those cheaply?

Add to that my expensive shoes don't even fit anymore. I don't know at what point I can say my shoe size has stopped dropping? So I'm hesitant to buy new shoes but I am stepping out of most of mine with each step.

Any thoughts? OP I hope you don't think I'm hijacking your thread? If you do I can delete and ask in a new one :)[/quote']

Macy's clearance racks are where I go. They have many seasonless jackets and everyday value pieces for suiting inexpensively. I find that their house brands like Alfani and Charter Club get closed out regularly.

Thanks for the tip. That should be easy enough to find.

I've been shopping at thrift stores for jeans. I want to say I've gone through at least.... 100+ pairs of jeans. The thrift store by where I live charge in the realm of $2-$5 per pair and I've gone a bit crazy before lol.

I went to lane bryant about.... 2 months post op, and the sales lady was telling me about her niece who had RNY. I was trying on their Genius jeans or whatever they are/were called. The sales lady told me to shop at thrift stores. She said, why spend $70 on one pair of jeans when you can buy at least 7 pairs at that price. Your body changes a lot and fast! It's more cost effective that way. Went to my first thrift store the next day :)

It'll get pricey once things start fitting a lot better. I go crazy buying clothing and heels now, and I love getting dolled up :D

For suits I do the Liz Claiborne collection at jc Penney. They Are sold as separate pieces and come in regular and women's Sizes but all go together. I need to replace pants a lot more often but I can keep the jackets quite a while longer so I don't have to keep replacing a while suit. Also helps me keep perspective on the fact that I'm getting smaller even when the scale isn't moving because I'm wearing the same pants but in a smaller size. Also seems like they always have coupons or a sale going.

I'm lucky enough to live near an Outlet Mall. Between that, Kohl's sales racks, Target and Walmart I'm able to keep up with out spending a fortune.

I have gotten some nice things from Freecycle. Also you can wear your clothes a bit baggy to jump a few sizes, clearance racks, ask friends for hand me downs, I am down 40 pounds and haven't bought any clothes yet. When I get to my goal, I will splurge ;)

GamerGirl -- In the Dallas metroplex, we have high end consignment stores. You could take your current suits in to sell or to swap for credit (which is sometimes higher than cash outright), then pick up some nice suits in the same place. Another thing we have here is GW Boutique, a high end resale shop affiliated with Goodwill. Secondhand stores are also good places to check -- my little hole in the wall thrift stores shockingly always carry designer labels. You can also check Craigslist, round up some friends for clothing swaps, or you could mention to other ladies your friendly with that you'd be interested in taking the suits they no longer want. My SIL just donated armfuls of dress suits, so they're available.

I am super excited at the prospect of being able to shop for common sizes in any store. Of course I realize things may still fit funny even after weight loss because of my body shape, I'm still excited. The link posted above about using a few pieces to create multiple outfits is great. Good luck to everyone before and after!

Depending on the area in which you live, you may be able to buy work clothes, suits and shoes at Goodwill. There are also consignment shops, but that may be more expensive. Also, if you'll look for sales on your city's FB page, you may also be able to find really good deals. My mother in law had a lot of Ann Taylor, Donna Karen, etc. suits she put on the city FB page - she was practically giving them away, just to clean out her closet.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
